I've had great luck in New York State, but I'm told by @Victor that Maryland is spectacular for variety and price.

@flyfish, for excellent prices on bourbons and US rye whiskeys, try 1) Montgomery County, Maryland, which has its own liquor system for nearly a million people, together with Maryland's lowest of the 50 states spirits taxes, 2) the rest of Maryland, especially Baltimore City, for variety, 3) a few of the best stores in DC, 4) Kentucky, especially the Party Source in Bellevue and, from what I have seen in ads, 5) some towns in New Jersey, close to New York City.

I lived in Georgia about 10 years ago. Unless something has changed, I would be shocked if it was less expensive there. California has a fair selection and a wide open, liberal marketplace, but the distance from Kentucky means that selection is not great. I would vote for the Washington, DC area with a nod to prices in Montgomery County, MD, off beat selection at some local DC stores and consistency in the state run stores in VA. Heck, you can hit the high points in all three jurisdictions in less than 3 hours if you know where you are going.

Kentucky at Liquor Barn used to have the lowest bourbon prices in Midwest that I had found (Knob Creek $22 or less if on special) and they carry some nice 'boutique' bourbons from KY area but not much of a selection from other US micro-distilleries. But last month when I drove through KY the prices didn't seem quite as low but then again it seems all the whiskey prices are going up these days!

My wife and I travel extensively in the US and I am always on the lookout for better prices on bourbon. I am not interested in the cheapest bourbon but in the best states in which to buy premium whiskey at a great price. I live in one of the benighted states of America that sets a "minimum price" to prevent misguided adolescents from accessing too much George T. Stagg. Speaking of which, selection is another consideration. Anyone care to nominate Delaware? How about Maryland? Georgia? Please provide an example of price per 750 ml.
