This young single barrel rye whiskey has a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% barley. And it is truly a craft whiskey, coming from private family-owned distillery. I only tried a sample, so I don't know the batch number. Unluckily I also missed on a whole bottle...
Age really doesn't matter in this case. Willet 4 yrs Single Barrel Rye 4YO comes in small batches and rarely, so you should definitely get a bottle if you can. I was too slow and still feel bad about.
As selecting my movie reference, I have to say that Willett simply is like that award winning short film called Please (starring Gerard Butler). Small production but full of emotion. Please, can I have some more!
Nose: Strong, fragrant kinda notes. Smooth with spicy rye and maple syrup. Sweet vanilla seals the deal.
Taste: Dry oak is strong. Full body with warming spices. Cinnamon and nutmeg. Has a tender side as well, with smooth rye and dark sugary vanilla.
Finish: Very good and long. Warming and spicy with black pepper being the main note. Dark with sweet, fruity tones. Very late, there's a minty note in the aftertaste.
Balance: Very powerful but smooth. Spices in a silky palate. Even without water Willett 4YO rye is pretty smooth. Let it breathe, gets even better and better.
