@broadwayblue put them, or HIDE them so she doesn't see them when she gets back...?

@Nozinan, a little of both. I can hide them in plain site as long as I can fit them in my cabinet. But alas that cabinet has been full for a while now so it has become more of a challenge to put them in locations she won't likely come across. lol I have made a new rule for myself that until I can reduce my bottles on hand I'm not going to purchase anything that is readily available. Basically I'm trying to limit myself to special releases, bottles not sold in the States and/or other rare editions...and as those are harder to come by my collection shouldn't be growing nearly as quickly. I say shouldn't because I placed about 4 orders from an overseas site previously mentioned here that brought with it the challenge of where to put about 20 new bottles. That said, I did just buy a bottle of Knob Creek 120 proof, so my rule isn't absolute. :)

And no reason your rule should be absolute. My wife has also given me essentially free reign as long as the bottles aren't all over the place. I did a wholesale reorganization that gave me about 3 spots a few months ago. After the Forty Creek special release and the sale on Amrut Single Casks I was in trouble again. I had to consolidate my dwindling wine collection (now that my kids whine I have a lot less I need to buy...).

After emptying out one half of my wine cabinet I was able to put everything away nicely, and, if I'm lucky, I should be able to accomodate the 2 bottles my brother in law is holding for me in Calgary. But I still have 6-8 bottles from Florida that will eventually be here... I need people to help me drink more so I can open more bottles to make room for them...

@broadwayblue, I was in the same predicament. I had a nice little wall unit/hutch about 6' h x 2.5' w x 1' deep. I maxed out at about 80 bottles, including the top of the unit.

In an effort to keep my whisky out of the 'dungeon', I informed the Commander in Chief that new 'book cases' were on order for the front room. I sold her a story about organizing and displaying, blah, blah, blah...

She gave me enough rope to hang myself. I didn't tell her the number of book cases. I came home a month later with three units matching our dining room set (of course they matched, I ordered from the same supplier).

On a Saturday when my three girls were out for some all day shopping therapy, and my son had vanished, I installed the book cases and filled the shelves. It was my 'Heineken moment'.

Upon their return home, my girls gave me a Daddy's Girl smile and the stamp of approval (it cost me tickets to a Bruno Mars Concert and the use of my car for the weekend...small price to pay). My wife was not yet convinced. When my 'gossipy" sister-in-law dropped by a few days later and exclaimed, "what is that ?!!", I thought I was relegated back to underground storage, until that is, she blurted out "I like it!"

I'm technically still relegated to underground storage. But I like it...we have a raised floor in the basement to avoid flood damage and the bottles are above floor level. The climate is cool year round.

Question is...what do I do when I move?

@Nozinan, It's amazing how our powers of re-organization can allow a once full cabinet to accommodate another 2 bottles. Rinse, repeat! If only the rest of my life was as efficient as my whisky cabinet. I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing I live in a modest sized apartment. If I had a house with a finished basement I imagine my collection would be quite a bit larger.

@paddockjudge, I guess you need to toast to your gossipy SIL. With the newly installed and approved book cases in place, how much room do you have for new acquisitions?

@broadwayblue, point made. My wife continues to ask when I'm going to drink all of this whisky. I tell her I'm trying. I could try harder;)

I think you're seeing evidence that marriage is not a contraindication to a substantial cabinet.

Now if only my wife would LIKE WHISKY....then we could enjoy it together, and likely more often.

I've held off on marrying a woman who tells me what to do. So I don't need to sneak anything past the wife. Instead, I've got a live-in girlfriend who gives me holy hell every time I am forced to order something I can't get in state. This said, her days are numbered. Why marry and then end up giving half of my earthly possessions to a nag?

Thank goodness there is no common law marriage in my state of the union (USA).

This said, I would give up drinking and all my prized bottles of whisky to find a good woman with whom I am well matched. C'est la vie.

In sooth, part of my reason for drinking so much delicious and rare whisky is to help ameliorate my frustration with the opposite sex.

fortunately, i've never had to sneak anything past my wife. many of the bottles in my cabinet have actually been purchased by her, including some of the most expensive and rare ones. more than anyone else, she encourages me to explore my passions in life. she doesn't drink at all, save for an odd glass of wine every so often, but she loves to see me happy - which is why she gets involved in my whisky world.

a little off topic, and not really about whisky, but if i ever felt i couldn't communicate openly and honestly with a person, the last thing i would do is marry them. perhaps i am lucky to have such a loving and understanding person to share my life with, but perhaps i am where i am because i never thought for a second that deceiving loved ones was a good way to be....

I did that just once - but I do not sneak anything past her anymore. Nowadays, if I see a hint of judgement in her eyes when I bring home a new bottle, I very kindly refer her to the astonishingly large collection of premium brand shoes & handbags that reside in the hallway closet...
