For my 20th encounter with Glentauchers, I will also taste the eldest I have ever tried. This one was distilled in 1976 and bottled five years ago by Cadenhead. It’s fair to say that Glentauchers is a bit of a noble unknown, which has everything to do with the fact that it is actually a blender’s malt, to be found in Ballentine’s, Chivas Regal, Black & White and Teacher’s. But this one is pur sang and 38 years old to boot.
Boy, what an uber-fruity nose! Quasi tropical on pineapple, mango, apricots, but also walnuts, apples and strawberry. A single slice of juicy lime, sprinkled with some light brown sugar. Delicious.
It is very oily, mouth coating and sticks to the teeth. Again an unbelievable fruit bomb, but now supported by something dusty that makes it quite old school. Soft spices from the oak and even a nice touch of strawberry and white chocolate. But the emphasis is again on the tropical fruit that makes this one dizzyingly good.
The finish is very long, starts off very fruit, but then slowly turns a bit grassy to finally die a mildly drying death. The wood has the final say.
I have possibly tasted the very best Glentauchers ever. Thank, Manny.
