Hi All.. I am very new in connosr. I am from India and currently living on UK for couple of months. I have a small collection of whisky in India. Can you please guide me how can I store my collection and keep it good in a hot climate like India. Your comments will be very helpful to me. Thanks.

@Arijit, welcome to Connosr! Your question is very interesting to me, both because I have a large collection of already opened whisky bottles, and also because I hope one day to move to Arizona.

I don't think that there are any corners you can cut in this case. You must control temperature in the environment, and you must keep the bottles away from direct sunlight. Whether that means constant air conditioning in the home, a very light refrigeration of the open bottles, or an underground cellar similar to a wine cellar in which the temperature is controlled, is up to you. Even sealed bottles will be endangered by accelerated "old bottle effect" if you keep them in very hot conditions for extended periods of time.

I can tell you from personal experience that the one hot summer in which I went without air conditioning in my home greatly accelerated aging and deteriouration of the bottles in my collection. I had about 20 bottles badly damaged from that experience, out of maybe 120 open. The others have "air-aged" to significantly beyond where they would have been without the prolonged excessive heat.

I should think that getting your bottles safely from UK to India would be an interesting question also.

Good luck! But be careful, or you will be taught a very hard lesson, as I was.

I keep all of my bottles in the basement, on the side of the home that is underground. This protects from heat and from cold, and from unwanted light. I keep most bottles in a cabinet so that not even artificial light will hit them.

@Victor Hello Victor. Very sorry for late response. many thanks for your kind suggestion. I have bought a upright chiller in India to store my Whisky. the only problem is the maximum temperature I can set on that is 6' Celsius. I am not sure, whether that temperature is good for storing whisky or not. Regarding your curiosity of transferring whisky from UK to India, I am packing the whisky bottle and tube very carefully with loads of bubble wrap and other stuffs. Also I have keep sealed the bottle cap with parafilm. So far it went good for me. But any suggestion regarding fridge temperature will be welcome. Thanks.

@Nozinan Many Thank for your kind response. But in India if I make an underground arrangement, that will be hot too and its not feasible to control temperature in such environment. I am keeping my whisky in a upright chiller now in 6' Celsius temperature.

@Arijit, if the 6 C temperature is working for you I would stay with it, but I would observe the whiskies very carefully to make sure that no damage is being done. I don't know what ideal whisky storage temperature would be, but my guess would be that the ideal storage temperature would be around the range of 10 to 16 C/50 to 62 F, more likely nearer to the middle-to-top of that range.

It is a very interesting topic, storage of spirits or cellaring whisky.

Unlike wine, there doesn’t appear to be very much in terms of guidelines for whisky cellaring.

My whisky sits in the 63F to 75F range throughout the year with winter days in the 67-70 range and summer days in the 72 - 75 range. There are some spring and autumn temps that fall into the 63 - 67 range when climate control is not introduced.

I think the cool temps (6C) won't harm the whisky, but I'd keep an eye on the corks and watch for mold.
