Yes, the two most boring discussions to me are "So, what are you drinking now?" and "What was the last bottle you finished?" They both seem to dominate the board. Neither really says much about qualitative observations about whisky. Rather, they are more quantitative: useful for industry people to track trends but not very helpful for whisky connosrs who are looking for observations of substance.

I've also found that participation on this website has been going down over the past few years. Not sure why. The US economy is supposed to be picking up, so people theoretically should be more interested in cool stuff to drink.

I like this website very much and really enjoy discussions and review that dig into concrete observations and useful info about whisky and whiskey. Frankly, though, I'm more of a whisky drinker rather than a bourbon drinker. This said, I do enjoy whiskies from countries other than Scotland provided they center around barley rather than corn. Blends with limited amounts of other grain alcohol can be interesting, especially from Japan.

I predict that whisky's popularity will go up markedly over the next decade, while bourbon will begin to taper off. I also predict that a great deal more barley based whisky will begin to be made in the USA. Barley grows terrific here! And it is one of the primary grains that the Founding Fathers really pushed hard back in the early 1800's. Barley-based whisky is both the whisky of the past and of the future. It is the once and future drink, so to speak. The complexities and amazing variations possible boggle the mind when compared with corn mash (bourbon), even wheated bourbon.

Well, I just had a second look and we've just hit 10 000 members.

Congratulations @Robl !!!!

I realize we don't have 10 000 active members but it still shows the makers of this site that it has been a positive thing for many of us.

Congrats on 10k. Can we get some new content now? :) Or perhaps some new featured reviews on the home page? The reason most members aren't active is pretty obvious to me...if the content is stale there is very little reason for most people to return.

I appreciate that you would like some new featured reviews etc... My understanding is that keeping the site running without crashing is time-consuming and improvements are underway. I know that rooting out fake members is a job on its own.

I'm thankful the buddy chats, reviews and discussion boards work as well as they do, which I find an impressive feat on its own.

This site is a great place to meet interesting people, and has generated friendships between individuals internationally who would never have otherwise met. How great is that?

And all for the efforts of 2 people...

Thanks again!

Would it not have been more meaningful to put up a Gaelic symbol for 10 000? or a picture of one of the overpriced Dalmore special editions?

@Nozinan, or 268 ml of A 700-ml bottle of 50-year-old Glenfiddich single malt scotch was stolen from a Toronto LCBO in April of 2013...that would be about 10, 000.
