Sample bottles

When I have people over for tastings I like to send them home with samples. Sample bottles are also good to store a small amount of whisky for future comparison between batches.

Unfortunately people are not good at returning the empties.

I used to get them at a science shop in Toronto but the store closed. Can anyone suggest a reputable online supplier of 1 or 2 oz sample bottles? Available in reasonably small quantities?

Try Specialty Bottle and/or Sunburst Bottle. I had good luck with the former.

If you're in Toronto, use these guys: en.consbottle.com

We did, and they price out cheaper than Specialty bottle as there's no shipping. I've ordered from both, the product is exactly the same. Remember to order polyseal caps, as they will keep whisky fresh without that little cardboard disk which turns to mush...

Wondering if you could also include the type and size of bottle you find the most convenient when you post where you order/buy the bottles from. I am thinking that 100 ml would be OK? That would look after most of my dreg solutions.

@Jonesz 100 cc ( I think 4 oz is about 120) is a good size for transfers from a well-used bottle but also to but away to compare with a future batch. Sometimes I like a larger (200 cc) one for bottles I drink from less frequently.

I like the 2 oz or 1 oz ones if 8'm giving out a lot of samples after a tasting session.

I get the plastic lids with a plastic liner ( looks like an inverted cone on the inside) for a good seal.

@Nozinan Thanx for the info, didn"t mean to hijack. Will look for a few 100 & 200 cc bottles. Any more suppliers appreciated.

@Jonesz not at all. No hijacking. Good question, good point, and made me think about what I needed.

I came into a couple of prepaid visa cards for doing some surveys - it occasionally happens. Being in desperate need for bottles to decant and to prepare samples (again...), I put them towards a large order from Saffire Blue.

I placed a large order because they charge a small order surcharge and I figured I might as well avoid it and get enough to last me a long time. And I got a variety of colours!

They arrived today packed tighter than a bank vault at midnight. So exciting putting them together. Now I have to figure out where they're going to go...

That's a good haul! I've been looking for something similar myself. It's good to be able to see a friend off with one for the road!

At my last tasting one of my guests poured herself a large portion of Talisker 57 North just before her taxi arrived. I offered her a small sample bottle.

I arrived with the bottle, whereupon she downed her glass in one gulp and poured a fresh sample from the bottle! scream

She didn't want her sample tainted by oxygen...

I use "Woozy" bottles from Amazon for my samples. They're bigger than most of those little guys that most folks use to trade (5 oz), but that's why I like 'em. They're big enough to effectively do a bottle split between yourself and your future self. Plus, I gotta admit, I really enjoy how they look like little whisky bottles.

@Nozinan, I was half-expecting you to post that in addition to pouring herself a sample that she then poured herself another large glassful and then took both whisky and glass with her into the taxi.

If the taxi driver then told her that she couldn't drink in the cab, then she would gulp down the second glassful and toss your Glencairn out onto the street.

@Ol_Jas Nice bottles. A little pricier at Amazon.ca but definitely something to consider for the future. I get lots of amazon dollars from surveys.

@Victor about 400 cc were consumed that night out of a 1 L bottle, probably close to 200 by her... I had never tasted it before, and now that I have, I might not have let it be known that I had a bottle had I known...

@Nozinan, 400 ml gone at one crack...I hope you have spares. 57 North is one I always hope to have in my cabinet.

@Victor No, it was the only bottle. I got a litre at DF in Israel. if I ever go through DF in on the road to the US (or if I win the lottery) I'll see if I can afford more. It is very delicious.

@Nozinan, yes, it is the funniest damned thing...on that drive back from Toronto I am always looking for Talisker 57 Degrees North at the Duty Free just on the Canadian side of the border. Twice I found it there, resulting in the purchase of 5 Litres total. Whenever I serve it to friends in Maryland I always point out that "This whisky is not sold in the United States of America."
