Thomas H Handy Sazerac 3rd Release 2008

This is the 2013 release at 64.2%. An uncut & unfiltered Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey.

This barrel proof rye is approximately 8 years old and is crafted from a small batch of around 15 barrels. Since hitting the market is has won many accolades but the one that seems to have caught most peoples eye is being named World Whiskey of the year by Jim Murray in his 2013 Whisky Bible.

I have read a lot and heard a lot about this Whiskey so I am excited to finally get my hands on a bottle.

Nose. Sweetness, floral, honey, herbal with super ripe sweet plums and caramel. Wonderful nose, you could sit and nose for a long time.

Oily, smooth and creamy.

Palate: fruit, allspice, liquorice, honey, cloves, more ripe dark fruits.

Finish: very spicy, sultanas, honey, long. The spiciness is amazing, fine, middle of tongue, hard to define.

I drink much more Whisky than Whiskey but it is apparent that this is a very special bottle. Complex yet hiding nothing. Beautiful.

@tjb, I am delighted to see that you got yourself a taste of Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye. Thanks for a very nice review. I have had neither a bottle nor a taste yet of the 2013 release. I am looking forward to it.

@victor Thank you for all of your help and advice with the Bourbon selection. It was a great success. I was delighted to get my hands on this bottle as well so this one is for you.

@tabarakRazvi Good work! Enjoy them both my friend.

Never before have I experienced a rye with such depth. Worth of its title of Best American Whiskey 2009. I plan to buy two more bottles...one for now, and one to put away for a few years.

I don't think I've had the current antique collection Sazerac. Both whiskeys are part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. My impression is that the Sazerac bottlings are getting less interesting over time, while the Thomas Handy Sazerac is around its prime. Again, I've only had one lately, but I think this one is hard to beat. Definitely needs a little water, though.

Regarding the 2010 release of Thomas H Handy and Sazerac 18 yr old rye whiskeys compared: The Handy is extraordinary, while the Sazerac 18 is serviceable, but not at all in the same league with it this year. To my palate the 2010 Sazerac 18 is downright boring compared to the Handy.
