Enter your story about, What discontinued bottle or great deal have you found and where?

While I was on vacation in Tennessee driving the back roads we stopped in Cascade Hollow to see the George Dickel distillery. George Dickel Barrel Select is pretty good Tennessee whisky. Like they say at the Dickel distillery, “If you only know Jack, you don’t know Dickel”.

After the tour which I recommend, we stopped in Tullahoma for lunch in an out of the way place. While eating I see a small liquor store out the window. I have to go in and look around and there I find a discontinued bottle of Old Charter 12y bourbon next to a ton of 8y versions. I snapped it up as fast as I can.

The other odd thing was they had 12 bottles of Stranahan’s Colorado Malt whiskey. I can’t find this stuff in New Mexico anymore so I ask the clerk how long they have had this stuff on the shelf and his comment is “it’s been there for years we never sell any of it”. So if you’re looking for an early bottling of Stranahan’s stop in Tullahoma.

I don't want to start a redundant thread so lets just leave it to disccontinued botles acquired.

I found a few Bruichladdich Infinity 1st Editions at my local Vintage Cellars as recently as a year ago. Also, bottles of Octomore 2.1 and 2.2 (the 2.2 can still be found in stores now). That's about it.. can't really think of anything else of note (well, I mean there's quite a few other "limited" bottlings available but I guess they're "discontinued" the moment they hit the shelves, if you think about it).

I like the discontinued thread , for a long time Van Winkle 12yr lot B was always on the shelf at my local store. Even though not discontinued , hard to find. You just never know what you will find when you walk into a store.

@dz11 Wow, Dallas Dhu.. is that a distillery or independent bottling?

it is a Gordon & MacPhail bottled 1982 22yo. wasn't inexpensive, but since i haven't been able to find much Dallas Dhu of any sort around, i grabbed it. based on pricing i see for when it was in stock, i think it was well worth it. if you know anythig about it, would love to hear. @systemdown

My local liquor guy is telling me that Elijah Craig 18 year is discontinued. He had two left so I grabbed one $45. I called around Albuquerque and everyone has been out for 2 months and their distributor is out. Has anyone else heard this rumor too and is it off the shelf where you're at?

@dz11 Don't know anything about the bottling, but I know Dallas Dhu is now a museum and some IBs are fetching quite handy prices. The G&M bottlings are always quite affordable compared to other IBs but they can be quite hit and miss - regardless though, I doubt a 22yo Dallas Dhu can be anything but pleasant! That might be your first and last chance to try Dallas Dhu so savour the experience! I'm jealous, I may never get around to buying a bottle (and if I did, it would involve me going out of my way and forking over a lot of cash online, I may never get around to it).

@Benancio, yep, EC18 has been gone from these parts for over three months. I posted an alert to this situation on my EC18 review in the comments in June, 2012. Why sell EC18 for $ 35-60 when HH can sell EC20 for $ 110-140 (domestically)? That is what they are doing.

@Victor, Thx for confirming that. I've read many of your reviews but have'nt got to that one yet. Great reviews by the way. The bottle I purchased is Barrel no. 3833 barreled on 4/26/90. I guess I should go back and get the other. I guess its all about the buisness, makes good business sense.

I've been searching all over NJ (and some surrounding states) for remaining bottles of Wild Turkey Rye 101. They replaced it with an 81 proof for the same price, so it's worth it to grab what I can.

I also recently found a bottle of Littlemill 12 year OB on a dusty store shelf that I grabbed. Not sure it's any good but it's worth trying some of these lost distilleries ... if only to know if their flavor profile is what made them go out of business in the first place.

@joshk, Wild Turkey 101 Rye is not being discontinued. The Wild Turkey 81 Rye is a new additional product, which is temporarily taking listing space and shelf space while the 101 is in short supply. Check out the Chuck Cowdery Blog on this subject. The 101 Rye will likely be in short supply through 2012, though, according to reports. What I do not know about this, though, is whether new batches of Wild Turkey 101 Rye to appear in the future (presumably after multiple years of aging), distilled at the new Wild Turkey distillery facility now in operation, will taste significantly different from the current Wild Turkey 101 Rye.

twice i've tracked down a bottle of balvenie 10 y/o founders reserve at the lcbo. at $23.40 CAD, i'll likely never get a better deal......

@Benancio, for more on the EC18 story, check out Chuck Cowdery's March 19, 2012 blog. According to Chuck, EC18 per se may or may not come back. If it does, it will probably be more expensive. What I also wonder is how long the stocks of distillate from the old Heaven Hill distillery which was destroyed by fire in November 1996 will last.

Well, I guess a fairly standard bottle, which I hear is being discontinued, is Johnnie Walker Green (picked up at the Calgary airport). But when you say "discontinued", would you include vintages? As I have a number of vintages that, obviously, aren't being made anymore...

I picked up two bottles of Ardbeg Supernova and four bottles of Ardbeg Alligator from two different stores recently. I kept one bottle of Supernova and sold the rest.

I found a small stash of Laphroaig 15 for 60 Euros at the Angoulême Edouard Leclerc store (a French version of Tesco's).

Benancio replied

@talexander, I would include vintage. What have you found?

@olivier, I never see Laphroaig 15 year in the stores in USA anymore, only in someones private collection. I love the 10 and 18 year old. The 15 year is a distant memory, I remember how good it is. That seems like a reasonable price to pay. People I know still say its better than the 18 year.

I bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 18yo Excellence from a lady who "found" the bottle somewhere in her house. I enjoyed the normal 18yo, so I grabbed it for € 150,00 (has been sold on TWE for £ 175,00). Don't know if it's just a special label or if the filling is also different to the 18yo, does anyone know?

@CPTFELZ From the information I found it is quite the rare bottle from Glenfiddich and quite the excellent looking bottle. I had read that its quite difficult to find due to the fact that its discontinued and its supposed to be quite delicious and smooth. Unfortunately couldnt find why the bottling was made or how its different from the others but I can tell you that you are quite lucky right now.

@GotOak91 , I purchased an old bottling of Bowmore 12, Clynelish 12 and Oban 12 for $100 from somone who wanted to sell his old stock. Also picked up a Laphroaig 15 few months back from a liquor store who sold it to me for $65.

@Benancio, I haven't opened them, but I have Lagavulin DEs '79 and '80, a Talisker DE '86, a Signatory 1974 Caol Ila 19 YO, and a 1972 Macallan 25 YO Anniversary Malt (pretty much the prize of my cabinet!) Also a 2009 Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve (opened), which is the greatest Irish whiskey I've ever tasted.

Port Charlotte "An Turas Mor, is it discontinued already?? Its off the Bruichladdich website, they use to have very nice write up and video about it. I bought a bottle last month and I love it, it's affordable at 60 dollars. Nice smoke and peat with a hint of sherry. It would be a shame if its gone already.

@Benancio Hmm that wouldn't surprise me if An Turas Mor was discontinued already. It probably doesn't fit into what they have planned for their "core" range of expressions under the Port Charlotte label.

I know its not whisk(e)y but I had found a bottle of Navan (Natural vanilla infused cognac by Grand Mariner) at a small ma and pa gas station on the south end of Columbia Mo. I can't remember the name of the place though

@Benancio Hi, An Turas Mor maybe being re-placed by the "Peat Project", I've not heard anything official but the idea behind both of them was the same, i.e. an affordable PC that is supposed to be for drinking not collecting.

I have found a few nice items in Nashville TN. I've managed to comfortably stock up on Glenmo Sonnalta PX, and have lucked into a couple of bottles of the Ardbeg Beist. In Clarksville TN I found an Glenmo Madeira Wood (old label) and an Bowmore 17 (old label / silk screened) both at a steal.

@Victor, The wife and I went to Bardstown last year for the Festival. We stopped by the new Heaven Hill public center, very nice. I just found the artical they gave out on the fire, they lost 7 warehouses and 140,000 barrels in Nov 1996. In April of 1999 they bought Bernheim Distillery in Louisville. My guess we won't see Elijah Craig 18y until 1999 + 18 = 2017. Just my opinion.
