what to do with a decanter

This is a topic that has seen a couple of very short threads in the past, but I think it's worth another look.

the nurse practitioner I work with is very nice and extremely well-meaning. She caught on to the fact I'm interested in whisky and has consistently tried to get me whisky gifts - Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye because it was "the world's best", and special glasses designed to hold a huge round ice cube...

this year she bought me a decanter. I was able to track down the manufacturer who confirmed it is lead free, so it's safe.

I've never used a whisky decanter. what do I do with it?

@Nozinan fill it with cold tea and stick it on the side board / drinks trolley for looks? Or, fill it with the cheapest blend you can find and pass it off as a top end, very rare, single malt and see who calls your bluff.

@Hewie Ha!

I was thinking of 2 options:

  1. Use it as a "living bottle", adding heels and things. Except that I like a lot of what I have on its own an don't want to waste.

  2. Use it to present a "Mystery whisky" at a tasting.

To be fair, I didn't say these were original options...

@Nozinan I like the mystery whisky idea. I've not been brave enough to try a living bottle - I too am a little scared of wasting the last of a decent bottle.

Use for Cognac, Armagnac, or other brandy or fortified wine is another good usage for a decanter.

Or you could put your Lemon Hart 151 in there and invite people to do shots!

@Victor would those spirits hold up well? I guess if I gassed it would be the same as a bottle.

And no one is doing shots with my slowly dwindling supply of Lemon Hart 151... even if/when I get my stash from nova scotia.

I was joking, of course. I cannot even imagine doing shots of Lemon Hart 151.

I have an old Hibiki 12 bottle/decanter that I'm planning to use to house a blend concoction.

I got an actual decanter as a gift a few years back that I've put port in.

I have 2 of them half filled with cheap blend remnants from years ago. I'm talking J&B, Bell's, Grouse etc. all mixed up. They look good but the contents are undrinkable. I would not put anything decent in them for any length of time as they are sitting out in the light and the contents will suffer accordingly.

Nice and thoughtful gift. If you offer it as a tasting to some visitors who are new to whisk(e)y, Monkey Shoulder seems to go over well as a first time sipper to those branching out from blends.

(I know Monkey Shoulder wont cut the mustard around here)

Tough one! Is she likely to visit you and see your decanterless shelves or is it more of a moral ordeal? Personally, I'd probably use it to serve a "lesser" whisky at parties and store it in a cupboard

I told her that I was going to use it for mystery drams and things like that. I spun it that this is something I've wanted to do for a long time...

I use one as a decoy. I put Monkey Shoulder in it and offer it to people who wouldn't know otherwise. Keeps them out of the better stuff.
