US$300 for a Brora 30. Worth every cent. Bought it when I was 46, drank it when I turned 50. At the time I opened it it was going for $500-$600 online. Was it good? Hell yes. I would love another bottle. Second place was a bottle of Laphroaig 30 I bought with a coworker for $300. We each got half. Was it worth it? No! I'll take Quarter Cask over 30 any day for a fraction of the cost.

@Wodha Which Brora 30 yo release was it?

I also feel the same about Laphroaig 30yo. Bought it for $215 for my 30th birthday a few years back. It was a nice experience but I wouldn't buy it again.

I have spent $300 on a Signatory bottling of a Port Ellen. I have a hard limit of $350 but as of yet, I've not found anything that would fill those shoes. There is a Douglas Lainge IB of a Macallan that I have considered as after trying it in Carmel, Ca. I like Macallan to begin with but this was head and shoulders above anything else. Kind of the way I feel about my 3 bottles of Snow Phoenix.

So far AU $130 for Octomore 02.1. Worth it? Yeah. I don't know that I'd pay much more than $150 for a malt unless it's for a very special occasion (like my 30th next year and probably every year after that ;-)

@systemdown, for what people have been posting for Aussie prices, $ 130 for a bottle of Octomore looks like a steal there.

@Wodha thanks for the info on your Brora 30yo. I have been itching for a Brora 30yo for a while now. I have tried a few independent releases and love the peaty expressions. I was extremely disappointed with the 25 year old (one of the most I've paid for a bottle). Yet, I still dream of picking up one of the OB 30 year old's before they disappear forever. I always look for various opinions and perspectives from people who have tried them. Thanks sharing your experience.

The most I have spent on a bottle of whisky so far is 300,- € for the Port Ellen 9th release; it´s a cracker but this money could buy me at least three or four other excellent bottles... I don´t regret it but this is my limit which I would just exceed for Lagavulin 21 which is one of my top 5 Whiskys and here I would maybe go as high as 450 but this is hypothetical as these bottles are priced much higher.

@Victor I've never had an Octomore, but considering the average bottle prices over here, if it's a really good bottle then I'd say it's likely a steal of a deal :D :D

250€ (333 usd) for a Karuizawa 1981 30 year old. Haven't opened it yet, will probably do it when I have reduced the current amount of bottles I have already opened ;-)

My limit would be at 300€ (400 usd) I think, but well.... my limits will probably increase or decrease depending on how much I'm paid ;-)

@thecyclingyogi

now it's 240 CAD for a 1982 (year i was born) st magdalene....

i turn 30 this july and my wife plans on buying me a bottle of hp30 to celebrate, which i'm sure will cost more. doesn't really count if someone else buys it, though :)

So far the most expensive was Uigeadail at 147CAD$ and PC8 at 140CAD$.

I guess I'll go up to CAD500$ sometime in the next couple of years. All the good 30y are about that price up here : HP30 CAD420$, Talisker 30 CAD495$, Brora 30 CAD507$. I might go to the US to find some cheaper though.

In the meantime, I need to find a nice mid-range bottle to celebrate my raise :) .

for me it would be a close contest between the Highland Park Thor or the Glenmorangie Signet, technically I got the sigent when it was on a store discount though. Both where between $155 (AU) and $175 (AU) from memory. I'd say the Signet was worth it as for the HP Thor technically now I've had it the 18 and 25 year olds are better IMO.

the most i paid was for 2 bottles of johnnie walker blue at $175 each. It was for my wedding for the bridal table but i don't think i would get it again.

@Jason0142 The HP Thor is a 16 Year Old whisky, so imho seriously overpriced. In Belgium it's about 150 EUR, which is ridiculous for a whisky of that age. But then, you must factor in 'limited edition', the packaging and the marketing blurb. Don't get me wrong, I love HP, but they are slowly but surely releasing more and more 'exclusive' bottles that are out of reach of many or at least overpriced.

My girlfriend set a new "most paid" mark last week. She picked up a bottle of Mackinlay's -- the Shackleton recreation -- for $157.49 USD after a tasting of Dalmore and Jura whiskies. I had tried it in August of last year and found it remarkably average. Even so, I had almost bought a bottle but she talked me out of it during a phone conversation. She managed to try it back in February of this year and loved it. It had been on her mind ever since.

@Mantisking I enjoyed the Shackleton's Replica my friend, but like you found it rather not worth while. I think it's more paying for packaging rather then the whisky.

@Mantisking, @SquidgyAsh. Agreed re: the Shackleton replica. It's a very nice malt blend but certainly not exceptional. I'd buy it again at something well under $100, but not at nearly $200 which is the current price here in Vancouver. I could get a Laphroaig Quarter Cask, an HP 12 and a Talisker 10 for about the same money. Three great malts for the price of one novelty malt blend? It's a no brainer.

@BlueNote Yah. I figured I'd happily pay around $80 AUS for a bottle of Shackleton. I think anymore and it's just not worth it. To be honest I enjoyed my Talisker 10 yr old and my Macallan 12 yr old Fine Oak much more just due to the fact that at $200 bucks a bottle I feel a special reason is almost needed to crack open the bottle.

Well, I upped my limit recently...tops is $280ish for a Rosebank 21, second is $240ish for a 40 year old Tamdhu, which felt like a steal.

Bought also a Rosebank 21 but paid "only" US$225. My new upper limit is now US$300 and it was raised by a Brora 25 Year old bottled in 2008.

$119.95 for a bottle of Scapa 16, but the LCBO still has some Bruichladdich 1989/2010 21yr Black Art available for a whopping $230. Am seriously considering it...

Just paid 311.00 for 2 bottles of Glenmorangie Signet, so, like 155.00 per bottle. It looked like a good deal (online) so i jumped on it. Off the shelf, it would have cost me 228 plus tax.

Not sure if I can see myself breaking to 200.00 mark any time soon. There are still a ton of things I want to try at well under 100.00 a bottle. To date, Laphroaig Quarter Cask is my favorite whisky, and I can get that for under 50.00.

@SMWSA Once again I feel myself missing the US :D Over here the society has a bottling at cask strength of 10 yrs for almost $200. I've seen quite a few society bottles hit over $400 easy without breaking a stride. In their defense though, every one of those bottles sounds oh so yummy!

About 5-6 years ago I paid £300 for a Macallan 30 year old sherry cask. At the time I was majorly into Macallan and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would I pay for it again now? Probably not. Not because I didn't enjoy it but because there are other options I would prefer. A Brora or Port Ellen would definitely be at the top of the list as many others have said.

Normally though I don't pay more than £50-60 for a bottle and at the moment have no plans to spend much more than that. However if I suddenly find I have more money than sense, my collection will contain numerous bottles I can only dream of owning!
