@Thrip : Near Buckingham, and I grew up in London, so it seems we are living each others life in reverse. I play guitar too - although I suspect not as well as you! 1550 eh? What's half a century between friends?

Vancouver BC Canada Spent a lot of time in Buckinghamshire, at Lane End and Cadmore End near High Wycombe. My mom lived in Lane End as a child. Wonderful place. Moving along. My most memorable Christmas ever: 1969, living in London at the time. Went down by train to Windsor on Christmas Eve with a friend, and stayed at a small hotel across from the Palace. Christmas morning dawned clear and beautiful, with the bells ringing and thoughts of flyng back to Vancouver that day to be with my family for Christmas. I digress. I started this evening, by opening a bottle of Highland Park 18 year old. After enjoying it for well over an hour, I decided to change to the Highland Park 12 year old. What a surprise! There seems to be more of a sweetness and honey flavour to it, and I am beginning to wonder if I actually favour it over the 18 year old. I know a lot of folks do. To be honest, I certainly don't notice any difference in the quality of the spirit. The 18 year old is probably a bit smoother, but at this point I don't really know if that is a positive or not. At this point for the difference in price from $65.00 for the 12 year old to $150.00 for the 18 year old, the 12 year old is the hands-down winner! Don't get me wrong, they are both so exceptional that either one makes me feel like I am in Single Malt Heaven. My final dram of this evening may just be the Laphroaig Quarter Cask which is always a bold surprise, which as far as I know can never be duplicated by another Single Malt!

@Piero I'm from South Bucks, near Marlow on the Thames, near where @Carl spent some time. Oddly I don't know the north of the county very well, but it is a very long county! Hope to move back sometime maybe. Good to hear you're a guitarist!

On a good day? Sunny Southern California.
On this day? Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

@HarkinsBG - that's probably one of the more remote places to log on to Connosr from! Good luck and keep safe.

@Piero it really is! Thank you for the well wishes. I've made a few additions to my collection and I'll certainly be having a few celebratory drams when I get home :)

@HarkinsBG What whisky, if any, is available there in Afghanistan? Are you able to try locally made whisky? If so, how is it?

@Wodha Isn't Afghanistan a muslim country? Surely they wouldn't make much whisky there ;) I'm in Londo, UK by the way.

@Hogshead Good point. I wonder if the entire country is dry? Hard to image. I wonder what whiskies the US Military takes on the road for the troops?

@Wodha in Kabul where the populace is more "Westernized" I'm sure alcohol is available. I'm aware that blended Scotch (Chivas and Johnnie Walker have been used in examples explained to me) and also American whiskey are available there. Alcohol consumption of any kind by US military members is prohibited, however, and in addition, where I am located the locals seem to have more of an affinity for opium than single malts.
Your question about local production of whiskey is a great one, however, and has piqued my interest. I haven't seen or heard of this actually happening at all. In the desert or mountains I can imagine limitations such as a clean water source or access to grains, but someone of enterprise located along the Helmand River, given the knowledge and raw materials, could probably distill a batch.

Actuallly my blood runs "BURNT ORANGE". "HOOK'EM HORNS".

Great idea for a post Wodha. Thanks for starting it. I've especially enjoyed the posts about living near Stonehenge and in the UK house built in 1492. That's amazing. Nothing nearly as exciting here. I live in Issaquah, WA about a 30 minute drive from downtown Seattle.
