I suspect many auction sites use auto bid functions. Sounds like the point here is that one had to pay to play, without knowing in advance that the site uses ceiling/auto bids. Any lesson that costs money is a painful one. But at least not as painful as paying $50US cover charge to go into a drinking/entertainment venue, only to get a headache from too loud music and parched lips from shoddy table/bar service.

Just had an unpleasant experience with the "Whisky Hammer" auction website.
While browsing that site I saw a nice bottle that was auctioning for 40 GBP and was immediately interested. But to bid you have to register and pay about 5€. Sure, no problem. However, after paying the 5€ and trying to bid 50 GBP I was told that the current bidding had automatically been upped to above my bid and to try again. In the end, I had to go to 100 GBP to have my bid accepted. I feel this is a ripoff as I may not have registered and paid 5€ if that bottle had been truthfully listed as being already bid for at 95 GBP. A word to the wary; the current bid prices on Whisky Hammer are not the real ones and you will not find out the real bid prices until you shell out 5€ to register.
