I was (properly) introduced to whisky in 1997 in Cape Town, we had a distillers group doing a week long marketing workshop at our hotel for their brands, at that time Whyte & Mackay, Dalmore, Dalwhinnie, Laphroaig, Jim Beam, Bookers, Knob Creek, Basil Haydens... there were more I just can't recall, needless to say when they left after the week I received a nice one dozen bottles package... so I started drinking whisky. I was also fortunate enough to participate in a few of their tasting sessions where I then learnt how to enjoy whisky especially single malts. Otherwise, prior to that from late 80's it was always only Jack Daniels.
