To quote Hank Williams, "I saw the light I saw the light No more darkness no more night Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight Praise the Lord I saw the light."

I saw the light at 41. I've know salvation for 4 years.

46 years old. Been serious about Scotch for 3.5 years now. Tasted my first single malt (Glenlivet 12) in 2005 (a Christmas present from my Father-in-law) but didn't start enjoy Scotch until the following Christmas when my Father-in-law gave me a bottle of McCallan cask strength. Tasted my first Islay (Laphroaig 10) shortly there after. It was the vast contrast in taste between those 3 Whiskies that hooked me.

I'm 49. I drank some JW Red and some Irish Whiskey in Ginger Ale in college, but pretty much stopped from 1994-2008, when I discovered single malts. For the last year I have also been discovering Bourbon.

I turned 23 couple of days ago. Discovered the marvelous world of single malt whisky this summer. Thanks to the recent birthday, this student will be adding a bottle or 2 to his starting collection very soon. Already a big thanks to all the reviewers and connaisseurs here for the valuable information!

Wanted to add: probably would have started earlier if it weren't for the endless choice in Belgian beers.

Another question because I can't start a new topic as new member: I am currently making Port from red wine in a new oak barrel of 5l. In the future, is it worth looking for a whisky to put in the barrel to get a port wood finish?

@Billyboy05055

@Wodha I'm 59. I started drinking bourbon & rye at 17. In my early 50's I shifted my focus to the Irish and then I discovered the single malts about 2 years ago.

I was first improperly introduced to whisk(e)y in my 20's and reintroduced to it in a proper manner in my early 50's. Now at the "mature age" of 53, I'm enjoying this new found passion of the whisk(e)y journey.

Who I envy are the people who have been properly introduced to this wonderful libation at an early age. What a lifetime journey of exploration to look forward to!

As of today, I can now be considered a 35 year old 'bottling', though I can't qualify as a Scotch whisky as my first 11 years were spent on US shores. Just before becoming 'shelf ready' as a 12 year old, my warehouse was moved to Southern Ontario where I have been aging ever since.

My whisky journey began in earnest in August 2010, with a trip to the Glenora Distillery (home of Glen Breton single malt Canadian whisky...don't worry SWA, it's not Scotch), with bottle acquisition/tasting/in-depth research beginning at Christmas of last year.

Looking forward to this evening to a tasting of 'birthday bottles' of Glengoyne 10, Te Bheag, and Parker's Heritage Collection 4th edition (10 yo wheated) bourbon. I have also been pleasantly suprised with a bottle of Lagavulin 16, and have been able to acquire a Bowmore Tempest that will be opened in the near future.

Im 39 , like many I drank Jack Daniels in my early twenties, I got married at 24 and my wife bought me a bottle of Glenfiddich for fathers day when I was 26. Hated it at first , started with Irish whiskey then scottish blends then became hooked with a bottle of laphroaig 10 year old ,then Highland Park 12 and Macallan 12 exposed me to sherry cask.

Started collecting at age 29 , never looked back. I found whisky flavors opened up to me when i got away from ice in the drink. It like clicked for me. I dont drink whisky everyday but its a love and passion.

I wish I had the first bottle of blue label back I drank completely with ice , arrgh

The older you get the more you want to experience and the more mature my palate becomes , Great topic.

I may have tasted a single malt twice before 2011, maybe 3 times

Now I'm 44 and I've been part of a whisky tasting club for about 2 and a half years. My book knowledge and my tasting skills (to a lesser extent) have taken off exponentially in that time.

Although I'd have tasted a lot more malts by now if I'd started earlier, my liver thanks me....

'Had my first seriously good Malt in 1960; a 15yo. Millburn That made me sit up and take notice. It took quite a while to come up with anything half so good. I 'bumbled' along, clueless for the most part, for years. My enlightenment was at the hands of a helpful Bottle Shop manager who was also a huge fan of Malt Whisky - I don't think he gave me a single 'bum steer'!

Connosr is such a valuable site! All that info. at your fingertips. Me, I was in the dark for years!

I'm 40. Before age 28 I was mostly doing shots and drinking jack and cokes. At age 28 I started drinking scotch and water (JW Red or Black) and thought it was the greatest drink on earth. I still drink JW Black on the rocks regularly. Then at about 35 I really started to appreciate and enjoy single malt whisky. No turning back now.

  1. Started drinking Lagavulin when I was 29. In my 20's, I was mainly exposed to whiskies like Wild Turkey and they just did not sit well, so it took me a few more years to experiment and discover that there is more to whisky than I had thought.

I have branched out considerably over the past few years. I don't know what happened when I hit my mid 40's. Single malt scotch just started to really hit the spot.

I used to like bourbon more than I do now. I just don't find that the expensive bourbons resonate like the expensive scotches. To me, bourbons seem more similar across the board, whereas scotches really demonstrate a wide range of characteristics and qualities by comparison. I find more variety in scotches than in any other liquor.
