Powers 12 y/o special reserve. Neat with a side of Borsec mineral water. Cocktail hour with cheese and crackers at my home pub with my wife on a Monday after work. My first dram of this whiskey. I quite like it. An underrated whiskey. People tend to forget about this one.

@soledoc, how would you compare the Powers 12 yo Special Reserve with the Powers Gold Label?

@RobertH
RobertH replied

@soledoc I completely agree. Just because it doesn't have a big price on the label it gets a pass by many. Quite a nice dram, the Powers.

1985 Glenrothes chases the Alberta Premium 30 year quite nicely.

I'm poor and homeless at the moment, but picked up a bottle of Palmer's Golden Cap to soothe the travels. More info here: palmersbrewery.com/page.php/… but basically it's 50:50 North British grain:Glen Grant, mixed with water from Dorset (where I've been on holiday).

Hope to do a review some time, but it's a cheap, drinkable blend with a good "local" twist to it.

Talisker 10. A warm welcome from a wild sea, or a head-butt from an angry scotsman. I cant quite decide...

Didn't know what was all the fuzz about Talisker 10 @Wodha . Now, I know. Probably top 3 in my best of 10 list.

I was in the sherry-mood... GlenDronach 15 Revival and Aberlour A'bunadh (batch 34). Both great stuff.

@JoeVelo i think you're right. It's both a full frontal assault on the senses and a gentle hand on the shoulder at the same time. I too will be pulling the cork on this one again ce soir. Formidable!

Hosted a tasting evening this week and sampled the Glenmorangie 10 along with the three extra matured 12's: the Lasanta, the Quinta Ruban, and the Nectar D'Or. Each one of the four is fabulous in its own right, and it's very interesting to compare what an extra two years in sherry, port, and sauterne casks will do. As a fan of Lillet Blanc, my preference is definitely the Nectar D'Or with the sauterne finish (since sauterne is made from the same grapes as Lillet Blanc and many of the flavors and aromas are carried into the whisky).

Bruichladdich Rocks on the rocks. I rarely put ice in my Scotch but when I do it's hot outside. To be honest, The 'Laddie with ice is better than neat. Maybe it's the heat.

Having some Dalmore 12 yr. Originally wasn't my favorite but now half into the bottle it's grown on me easy to drink, quick finish. I've come to realize that there is a time and place for all whisky's.

I'm about finished with my first bottle of Old Ballantruan. And I have to say it's been a pleasant surprise. A poor man's Lagavulin. And this poor man needs a Lagavulin.

Last night was Dalwhinnie 15 and HP 12. Both new to me and, I must admit, I was slightly disappointed with both (though the HP was improved with the merest splash of water). Probably my ignorance so I'm going to leave them aside for a few months to see if all 3 of us get better given time :)

Tonight's festivities: I just returned from a sort of "Ukulele Woodstock", 944 ukulele players performing together on the lawn at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland. The old record was 862 players in the Guiness Book, so, this should become the new record once it is verified by Guiness. What a spectacle, hundreds of ukuleles being waved in the air like the AK-47s of triumphant revolutionaries! My celebratory dram: Macallan 18!
