After a log weekend and catching up on work at the office, a nice glass of Glenmorangie La Santa (12 sherry cask) on a chilly night sounds about right....

I'm having a glass of the Compass Box - Oak Cross (sort of the little brother of the Spice Tree). I am amazed by the consistent and high quality of this whisky boutique's range. If you haven't tried yet any Compass Box...do it, you won't be disappointed.

Last night I had a couple drinks, first a Manhattan with Rittenhouse rye, then a dram of Glenfarclas 12yr, followed by the last pour from the Rittenhouse Rye bottle. It was a good night

Isn't it so much fun to open a new bottle ! The new bottle is Glenfiddich 15, which is matured in sherry, bourbon and new oak casks, and then married together with malt from older solera barrels. Though sometimes a bit sharp, this is absolutely delicious ! It reminded me of the marvelous and sweet Jura 16. But then you have to try Singleton 12, which is right up there as a delicious sherried competor ! For this evening, the theme is "delicious" !

Had some Canadian Club last night. Not at all what I was expecting. The nose was of rubbing alcohol, but the flavor was sweet and smooth, kind of like a flat fountain soda. I'll try it in a Manhattan next time and see what it tastes like.

Finally opened my bottle of William Larue Weller Bourbon 2010 release, at 63.3%. Wow, what a momentous liquid at only about 13 years old. It is wonderful when cut to about 45 to 50% abv, and no less magnificant ! Then try comparing to Pappy Van Winkle 15, 53%, (both wheated bourbons) and ponder for the rest of the night as to which you like better :) In the end, I am hesitant to suggest that William may have surpassed my favorite Pappy this time.

Bunnahabhain Toiteach: It's Islay in your mouth and everyone's invited.
No age statement, heavily peated Bunnahabhain. Anything is better when it's heavily peated.

I just gave a mini-tasting for three other persons: Yamazaki 12, Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX, Glenmorangie Signet, and Ardbeg Uigeadail. Two of the three attendees liked the Signet and the Uigeadail best, while the third preferred the Sonnalta PX.

KaVaLan, Taiwanese Single Malt. I lived in Taipei from 1987-1993 so it's a required bottle. Quite good actually. Rumor has it it's Scottish malt. The owner says his goal is to sell 100 year old whisky when the time comes. He has about 90 more years of waiting.

@Victor...wish I was there for your Glenmo based tasting!! Saturday night, with a slightly sore throat, my wife and I were sitting on the front porch in roughly 7 degree C weather. I poured a small dram of my cherished Lagavulin 16. Not only did the 'campfire in a glass' hang true, I also picked up a mint/menthol flavour on the palate that I had not noticed before. Very nice and refreshing...I'm wondering if the cool weather (I had been outside for about 10-15 minutes before first sipping) affected the flavour profile...the mint/menthol seemed to be an extension and enhancement of the pine needle notes that I have noticed with this bottle at room temperature. Lagavulin 16, the bottle that keeps on giving!! :)
P.S. As an added bonus...the sore throat was completely gone the next morning!

@Victor We've also been dabbling in the Glenmorangies for our tastings. The most recent included Signet, Finealta, and the 18 year old. We've sampled their entire line with the exception of Sonnalta PX and the 25 year old, and so far the standout favorites have been Signet, the 18 year old, and (among the less experienced tasters) the Original 10 year old. It sounds like we need to pick up the Sonnalta PX.

Blantons Special Reserve. It's a fairly decent whiskey, if a touch underdone at 40% ABV. Compared to the 45% Makers Mark I had last night you can certainly notice the difference
