Smokehead, I'm drinking Smokehead. It's a little young tasting, a little brash. Overall, I'm enjoying it. Also enjoying the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, but think I prefer the Laphroaig 10yr.

Two new bottles. Grace a Wodha, I am having first Aberfeldy 12. Very nice, and I bet it mellows nicely in the bottle as well. Also, Balvenie 14 yo Caribbean Cask: Scottish malt with a hint of rum. Very accessible and easily drinkable.

Herradura Anejo tequila and Cabo Wabo Reposado tequila ... both flavorful sipping tequilas. But then we have Don Julio Reposado, aged for a whopping 8 months ! The distiller indicates notes of peat, apple, lemon, dark chocolate and dried fruits; but what I notice and savor mostly is chocolate, pistachio and walnuts ... this one is a shelf above.

@Victor: I have recently acquired the Balvanie Rum Cask. While I very much like the rum, it seems just a bit sweet. I will have to do a bit more research tonight to see if it was just my pallet. The Aberfeldy 12 and 16 are quite mellow and do improve in the bottle as far as I can tell.
Cheers!

@RobertH, I am really just starting to get to know both the Balvenie 14 yo Caribbean Cask and the Aberfeldy 12. Your Balvenie Rum Cask is a little different, and aged 17 years, right? I would not describe my Caribbean Cask as particularly sweet. Actually, on second tasting I noticed quite a bit of lemon citrus in both the Balvenie and in the Aberfeldy 12. I am hoping that it was something I ate that night, since I don't care for much citrus in whisky. Time and additional tastings will tell.

@Lars, that Glenfiddich 15 is pretty nice for the price ... I always enjoy this budget-minded non-peated, sherried single malt. How did you like it ?
Currently, sipping several of my engaging goto bourbons and cousins: Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Bulliet Bourbon, Old Weller Antique 107 and cousin Jack Daniels Single Barrel (Tennessee). Old Weller is the most delightfully engaging. For a maximized and interesting experience, about a dozen varied and enjoyable sips gives you a cumulative ounce of whisky samples (30ml) ... assuming 1 sip per bottle. Have room for another 30ml ? ... you can sample additional bottles for a total sample of 24 bottles !

@AboutChoice You know after opening a new bottle I'm not usually crazy about it but a day or two later I really begin to enjoy the flavours. Must be the air oxidizing with the whisky. The Glenfiddich I will admit was bought in part to the advertising I saw in the Whisky magazine, raisins and honey. I've had some of the Jack Daniels Single Barrel (Tennessee) smooth and sweet, I really like it. I'm already thinking about which whisky to get for my self for Xmas so many options.

@Victor How are you liking the Balvenie 14 yo Caribbean Cask , I personally found it a little rough but very drinkable, the nose is terrific I could smell it all day long. I have to start writing some reviews for the whisky's I have.

@Lars, on first taste I found the Balvenie 14 yo Caribbean Cask very drinkable and pleasant, though not profound. On second taste I noticed a lot more citrus than I had at first. Citrus is not a flavour I like in whiskies, except in very small amounts. Actually, for me, moderate or heavy citrus throws a whisky off and makes a whisky "rough" in that it is a strong flavour that distracts from balance and dominates the other flavours. Good lemonade tastes much better to me than any lemon I have ever had in any whisky. The jury is still out for me on the Balvenie 14 yo Caribbean Cask. I will give it further tastes, and I am also hoping it will mellow out now that the bottle is open. If I am not sure what I think about a whisky, or if it is "sort of, but not quite good" I usually give it more time and more tastes for it to develop after the bottle is opened and for me to more clearly sort it out.

Started off with a pour of delicious Parker's Heritage Collection 10 yo Wheated Mashbill. With colder weather beginning to creep in, I broke out the HP12 and Laphroaig 10. Ahhh, the rights of fall and winter!

I am re-sampling Ballantine's Finest Blended Scotch Whisky. I can't say that I have been too crazy about this one, though it is growing on me a little. It seems awfully caramel-y tasting to me for a Scotch Whisky. There is a lot more flavour complexity also going on here, which is interesting, but it still doesn't seem to add up to something that I will be wanting to drink very often. This one is more interesting to me cerebrally than sensually. The thought of figuring out the complexities is more interesting here than is my gustatory enjoyment of actually having it in my mouth and tasting it. The nose isn't bad, though.

@Victor, I find Ballantines Finest (blend) pleasant and drinkable, but I very much enjoy the 12-yr blended, which I reviewed on Connosr a while back. I have later learned that Ballantines also offers a vatted (pure) malt as well ... if you can fine it. It sounds like you're off the beaten path with this one :)

@AboutChoice, about the Ballantine's Finest, you have a lot higher tolerance than I do for sweet caramel flavours in whisky. A lot of caramel/toffee always seems to me to be distracting and artificial tasting. Ballantine's Finest does have a very good nose, though. I would still like to try the older expressions of Ballantine's, of course.
