I might have to crack my remaining bottle of 2015 Cairdeas tonight so that it’s good and ready for a H to H with the 2019 which I will hopefully be getting next week.

World Series: Was that plate ump’s strike zone, to understate it, inconsistent? ambiguous? totally unfathomable? I was so incensed I was compelled to pour a second dram of Laphroaig Cask Strength. Resisted opening the 2015 Cairdeas...for now.

@Victor No, I never met him - my work is in feature film, and his is primarily in American television, so our paths never crossed. Yes, I've heard he's a wonderful guy.

@Victor @BlueNote @paddockjudge - I've been dipping into this World Series as someone who knows little about the game. Great comeback from 2 - 0 down and it sets the next game up nicely. I'll have to settle for a highlights reel though ...

Having a Talisker 18. I've been umming and ahhing whether to write a review or not for this bottle as I only did one last year. I think I will as there are definite differences and Id say that this bottle is perhaps not quite at the level the last one was - still bloody good though!

@RianC I haven’t had the 18 since 2011. It was a brilliant dram then and reasonably priced it has since become unavailable in Canada and very pricey in the US. A review of the current batch would be great. I’ll be in UK next year, so I’ll be on the hunt for a bottle...or two.

@RianC, @BlueNote, my currently open bottle L3238CM000 (opened 6/23/2018) is a beautiful Talisker, but not nearly as beautiful as the previous bottle, batch number long forgotten.

Tonight, Penderyn SMWS 128.7 (5 year - Mar. 2013) "Down the old fruit mines" - First-fill barrique (shaved/toasted/re-charred) - 61.1% ABV. A perfect dram for a crisp, cool fall evening.

And a peated Croftengea from Loch Lomond, SMWS 122.23 (7 year - Feb. 11th, 2011) "Highly a-musing" from a second-fill ex-bourbon hogshead - 57.7% ABV. Sweet peat with a spicy, ashy finish.

I've got a couple of drams left in my 200ml Bunnahabain Moine PX Finish that are due to be taken care of. Maybe tonight during the ball game.

@paddockjudge @Victor - What a game 6! In honor of tonight’s Nat’s victory, drinking the appropriately named "Truly a fairy tale", a 7 year (April 2011) Glenallachie, SMWS 107.16, from a 2nd-fill toasted oak butt - 67.0% ABV

@bwmccoy may the 'fairy tale' continue through Game 7! I think that that awful umpire's call fired the Nationals up in a very big way, not just in last night's game, but for tonight's game as well. It was a nice touch for Nats' Manager Davey Martinez to get himself ejected from the game. What perfect timing for an extra surge of energy and passion. Whether the Nats win or lose tonight, being the only MLB pitcher in history to go 5-0 wins in a post-season set of playoff series did wonders for Stephen Strasburg's chances at the 2019 National League Cy Young Award.

@RikS Baseball and Cricket are only similar in that they both involve bats and balls. They are dissimilar in that the rules of baseball are understandable (but only slightly more so as we witnessed last night). grin

@Victor, @bwmccoy, @paddockjudge, @RikS I think game 7 calls for an extra special dram, so it will be the last couple of ounces of my 1975 BenRiach single cask which is lightly peated and spent 31 years in a port pipe. This was a gift from an employer.

It's down to Max Scherzer and a few hot bats tonight. It would be amazing if neither team manages to win a home game.

Abraham Bowman 17 yo Bourbon, 73.75% ABV. I am toasting the Champion Washington Nationals/Montreal Expos. Res ipsa loquitor. 6-2 final score of game 7, with every game of the 7 won by the road team, something never done previously in any 7 game series in US sports history. There is no recorded incidence of the road team winning 6 games prior to this series. This was an astonishing game and an astonishing series.

Zach Greinke pitching for the Astros was astonishingly good. I hate to see a performer that good have his team lose the game after he turned the ball over to his relief pitching. He held the Nats to 1 hit and 0 runs for 6 innings. The game looked bleak for the Nats until Greinke left the game.

Good to relish this now for the Nationals, because their stars Rendon and Strasberg are both free agents now, and Scherzer, Sanchez, and Kendrick are closer to age 40 than to 30. Zimmerman is up there in age too. It could be many years before the Nats are this competitive again, depending on how the personnel shift.

@paddockjudge @Victor - Congratulations to the Washington Nationals on their World Series title! What a game! What a series! I’m repeating last night’s "Truly a fairy tale", a 7 year (April 2011) Glenallachie, SMWS 107.16, from a 2nd-fill toasted oak butt - 67.0% ABV.

Followed by another appropriately named dram "Highly a-musing", a lightly peated Croftengea from the Loch Lomond distillery, SMWS 122.23 (7 year - Feb. 11th, 2011) from a second-fill ex-bourbon hogshead - 57.7% ABV.

What a night for Sports. Also tonight, Toronto won and will now face Seattle for the MLS cup in a couple of weeks. That will be a epic battle.

@bwmccoy Had a wee one of Kilchoman 100% Islay in the bottom of the ninth. What a weird and wonderful series. I was pulling for the Nats, but I too felt a bit sorry for Greinke. I think they pulled him too soon. Scherzer held the Astros off long enough for the Nats' bats to get going. Seven road wins and a very entertaining series.

@Victor
Victor replied

@BlueNote copy that. I would have kept Greinke in the game. The Astros had the lead. Their starter Greinke had performed excellently in his prior start against the Nats, had given up one bad pitch in the first 7 innings, and was on pitch count track to be able to pitch for 8 or 9 innings. If it is not broken, do not attempt to fix it.

That said, congratulations Washington Nationals!

I had a dram of Dalmore 12 before taking my youngest out trick or treating, and now that we’re done I’m having a pour of Booker’s (127.4 Proof). This Booker’s is opening up very nicely.

Haven't decided on my Halloween dram yet. Could be Corryvrekan and some dark chocolate.

@BlueNote My wife and I argued back and forth over the existence (or lack thereof) of a “Dad tax”. I feel it’s kind of like the angel’s share in whisky maturation. The angels get theirs and I feel entitled to mine. stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

My favourite candy is, in order:

  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  • Snickers
  • Oh Henry
