@OdysseusUnbound - Please tell me you went full on Axl hot pants look?! smile

Have you tried any of the Master Distiller bottlings? They are pretty much what you request and are all the better for it.

@RianC I wanted to wear the tight white spandex bicycle shorts (complete with hilariously stuffed crotch), but my wife assured me that nobody, and I mean nobody wanted to see that.

@RianC The #4 from the Master Distiller series is only bottled at 43%. Not much of a bump up, but it’s something I guess...

@Nozinan I thought it was pretty good for a 60% ABV exclusive Oroloso scotch at $70. Would I pay close to $90 for it, it would be a harder sell.

@OdysseusUnbound - I did a review on that no. 4 bottle a while back. It's only a small step up I agree, but I can say that having compared the Old no.7 with the MD bottles on a couple of occasions it is a significant improvement. Not mind blowing, but better and very drinkable, especially with a BBQ!

@OdysseusUnbound, @RianC, Jack Daniel's? Try the Single Barrel Barrel Proof, when you can get it. That's Jack on another level.

@Victor - I saw they had it at MoM recently but it all got snapped up pronto! Shame as I'd like to try it as the SB @45% was decent but I reckon a bit more oomph would have really improved it.

@RianC, 'oomph' out the wazoo!

A summary of my attitude toward Jack: 'Sometimes it's good, a minority of the time. Consistent enough to be trusted? Hell no.'

The only Jack I would buy blind is the Single Barrel Barrel Proof.

@RianC they have it now (silver 50%) on MoM for £47

@OdysseusUnbound

@Victor Funny, they only have the 48% ish one here, but I feel like even that would be an improvement...

@Victor I want a lot of things....Those JD SB BP are hard to find.

@RikS - Thanks! Just having a look on MoM they have a few unusual JD offerings; the one you mention (which I'd leave in the hope of snagging a barrel proof) and a 1ltr bottle of a JD Bottled in Bond which I never knew they did?

The SB barrel proof are 'due back soon' so maybe one for xmas? I'll add it to the ever expanding list ha ha!

@RianC what's the difference between the 50% silver and "barrel proof"? This ain't really my expertise area...

@RianC
RianC replied

@RikS - I think the 50% one is single barrel but cut to 50% whereas the barrel proof is SB but uncut.

@Victor
Victor replied

@RikS, yes, as @RianC says, uncut.

Uncut = barrel strength = barrel proof = cask strength.

UK folks like to call them 'casks'. Americans don't usually associate the barrels they use with wine, so they just call them 'barrels'. .

@RianC The bottled in bond is a new release.

@OdysseusUnbound If your're ever in Tennessee I can hook you up. Pretty much every store has a bountiful amount at about $60-65USD. The only other (near) barrel proof that I would consider a better deal is KCSB.

Victor replied

@casualtorture, 60-65 bucks for Jack at 50% ABV? Hell, that's what we pay here for the Jack Barrel Proof? Why would anyone in the US want to pay that? Did Jack just learn how to make better whiskey, or something? Is the world coming to an end?

Oh, maybe you're talking about the Single Barrel Barrel Proof....

@Victor No No No, the Barrel Proof.

@casualtorture

@Victor I was referring to the Knob Creek as near barrel proof since it's bottled at 60%.

I walked to a LCBO just to have a look around for the new 2018 Northern Borders Collection. Instead, this jumped out at me, an old returned bottle of Macallan 12 coded L0719E L10 14:09 16:05. It's only 40% but, I guess bottled in 2005.

@Astroke At some point, I'm going to have to figure out how to order from Alberta. My biggest fear is that temptation in selection would cause my credit card to melt.

@fiddich1980 Not much to it, but unless you order 3 bottles or so, or hop a ride on another order, then the shipping can get expensive. This Arran came in a much bigger order by someone else and cost me $7 for shipping.

I had been looking for a bottle of Tobermory 10 locally (for a reasonable price). However, there seems to be a shortage recently despite assurances there would be sufficient supplies to last whilst the distillery is shut down for two years for refurbishment. Anyway, I walk into a shop to find a few on the shelf so that's my latest purchase. I've mentioned in another thread recently that I've really been enjoying a friends bottle so it was time to grab one for me. 46.3% ABV, NCF, un-coloured, ex-bourbon cask, un-peated goodness! I'm sure the floral notes will be perfect for Springtime drinking now.

@OdysseusUnbound if you can try the JD single Barrels we get here even despite only being 48% ABV some of them are pretty good, I've split a bottle with friends and been pleasantly surprised, especially after some exposure to air. I definitely want to try the barrel proof version but my whisky mule for the US has become very unreliable of late, oh well.

The bottled in bond is a new product they talked about it on Whiskycast recently, I think it's a duty free thing for now, I could be wrong. I think it's interesting to see how Jack Daniels has stepped up over the last few years with these expressions.
