Nice purchase on the Brodick Bay, I got to sample it along with the new Single casks Arrans that Kensington Wine market received. All we're of very high quality, I liked the 21 yr old single cask (#559) the most, it was a crisper and seemed to pop the most and it's priced about the same 199$.

I picked up a JP Wiser’s Alumni Series Wendel Clark 11 Year Old Rye, not because I’m a Leafs fan (I’m not), but because I’m a sucker for novelty, and for hockey-related things. I may even buy another one to open and drink.

I also bought a Bearface Triple Oak 7 Year Old Canadian Whisky. Why? Intrigue. This is a start-up, so their stuff is made by sourcing exceptional 7-year-old Canadian whisky from the shores of Lake Huron, before shipping it 4,000 kilometres across Canada to British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, a pristine, one of a kind, glacier fed wine region. Bearface Triple Oak is the result of exhaustive experimentation. A Canadian whisky with a bold finish derived from three different oaks, each selected for the distinct flavour they impart. This single grain whisky starts life aging in ex-bourbon charred American Oak barrels for a minimum of seven years, imparting warm smooth vanilla notes. It is then placed in tight-grained French Oak ex-wine barrels with over seven years of use for high end, rich Bordeaux-style wines that Mission Hill are noted for, adding luscious dry fruit notes and a deep ruby colour. The final finish, a first in Canadian whisky, is with 3-year-old, air-dried virgin Hungarian Oak, adding rye-like notes and a distinctive rich texture.

The marketing blurb was interesting enough, and the 35 dollar price tag made me go “oh why not?”

Just picked up this year's Northern Border Collection (Lot 40 11yo CS, Wiser's 35yo, G&W 11 Souls and Pike Creek 21yo). Factor in my bottles of CC41 and Forty Creek Unity, I think I got all the big Canucks this year!

Pulled the trigger on this Deanston, decent reviews and under $100 at the LCBO. The Allardice is a replacement that needed to happen.

@Astroke, nice selections! That Allardice is likely to be 22 (2017) or 23 years old (2018) bottling. Age doesn't necessarily make it better, just more expensive. Nice to know you've got a bottle of 18 YO with a few extra years on it.

@paddockjudge I know but, then again another member of our cliche is going to receive a bottle of Dissertation. I have a wonder lust for strange out of the way liquor stores and what they may harbour. Tonight, I tried to convince a restaurant owner to part with a bottle of Campbeltown Loch 21 at 40%. He was not interested so I order a dram from the very same unopened bottle and witnessed the cork disintegration. The dram was still excellent more, Springbank than I expected.

@talexander, I'm keen on learning what you think of the CC 41 YO. The price tag of $300 has me gripping my wallet tightly. I have sampled the NBC releases and find all of them to be of good quality, but I do have my favourite. I'm waiting to taste them all again before committing to a large position...what I mean is, before I commit to a paddockjudge-sized position.

@fiddich1980, I think it is wonderful that you will be bringing a bottle of Dissertation to one of our fellow Connosr's. There will be more than a few bottles changing hands, and a good number of drams being shared when we gather in November. Two weeks until then.

@fiddich1980, there are certain benefits attributable to going for a walk, but coming home with a bottle of Macallan 12 YO Sherry Oak is not one that I was familiar with. Good catch!

@Astroke, I pulled the trigger on that Deanston Bordeaux cask too. I like most of what I've tasted from Deanston and I figured it would be fun to try since it is full wine cask maturation.

@cricklewood I have a Glen Garioch 1998 Wine Cask matured, the same Bordeaux wine casks but aged 15 plus years. Really good stuff.

4 bottles of Wiser's 35 YO. Why?

The whisky doc said they would be released at $200 but the LCBO accidentally listed them for last year's price... $165.

All will go to a friend of mine... I still don't pay this much for my own whisky.

@Nozinan I noticed that pricing error as well but my budget is blown. I was lucky to get a Lot 40 11 yr CS after the Tasmanian Whisky Devils whirled through town and cleaned them out.

@cricklewood had that Deanston in my hand today but decided to put it back. I don't think I've had a wine barrel matured scotch before so I was apprehensive of spending$100. Although the Deanston Virgin Oak and the 10 YO PX finish I have are both great.

@Astroke There were a few of the Lot 40 CS left at Summerhill when I was there. One guy I met bought two and succumbed to the salesperson's suggestion to get another. Felt he would regret it if he didn't. I agree (but I have mine in Calgary).

Nice guy. I showed him the URL for Conosr.com . Hope he joins. I told him I know where he can get a taste of last year's Lot 40 CS if he does...

Not exactly purchased. Not exactly just?

While we were looking through the cabinet tonight, @nosebleed was rummaging ariund in my special bottles shelf and pulled this out. Now I know it’s NOT supposed to be there but he insists he knew nothing about it.

It has a happy birthday sticker on the bottom so my guess is he planted it in April when he visited and because it’s my rare bottles shelf I haven’t been moving things around. Or he’s having me on and he planted it last night when he arrived.

Either way it’s a well-regarded bottle by some on Connosr and while available is overpriced here in Ontario. I think it will be necessary to open and try it.

Thanks!

@Astroke , sorry I am late in my reply's. I saw that Glen Garioch at the SAQ as well it came hot on the heels of a sherry cask Glen Garioch too. I was hoping one of the stores would have an open bottle for me to try but have had no luck. I have heard good things about these GG releases but haven't sampled anything beyond the standard 12 yr old.

@boatracer I almost regret pulling the trigger on the Denston, especially now that I see that Alberta has just got Longrow 14 Sherry cask! Oh well, it's cask strength and wine cask should be fun to try in comparison to either other wine cask whisky or against the PX one.

@casualtorture i hope you will like this one more than I did.

I got a sample of the same batch (same ABV) from MoM because it was available in Ontario for a reasonable price. It was enough to turn me away.

I picked up a Rittehouse Rye BiB yesterday to make use of my partners Prime membership before it finishes soon. A rye I've wanted to try for ages and it seems to get pretty solid reviews. At least with rye you know a not so great one will still make a damn fine cocktail!

Also tempted to pick up a Wooford Reserve Rye as it's on sale for £25 which seems a very good deal.

@casualtorture - you popped one recently didn't you? How was it - worthy of a purchase at that price? Thanks

6 years ago 0

@casualtorture

@RianC It is very fruity, not a lot of rye spice or nutty notes. It's an easy drinker. It's a bit too light and fruity for me but if you like fruity rye you will like it. $25 is cheap though, I paid $34.99 in Tennessee. I'll do a proper review soon.

@casualtorture Thanks. How does it compare to the standard WR and have you tried Lot 40 rye? That seems more sweet than other ryes I've had but I like it a lot.
