As with the post that started this topic, I have finished off a bottle of Talisker 10 tonight. I shall miss it.

This weekend I went on a trip with old class mates. I had three bottles of whisky I kinda wanted to get rid of: The Singleton, Glenlivet 15, and Lasanta. They were all emptied along with a lot of beer and wine. I'm only today pretty much back to a normal state :P

Bowmore12, Laphroaig 10 year old, and Glenmorrangie Nectar D'or, there was just a little heel left in each bottle, so I had to do the merciful thing and finnish them last weekend, 3 nice 3 oz. drinks. life is good. Besides, now I have room for more on the shelf.

Bulleit Rye in an old fashioned drink. Didn't like much by itself but so good in the drink. The spiceness and wood complements the citrus in the bitter and the lime juice.

We finished quite a few bottles NYE...the remains of what was left in bottles of Maker's Mark, Forty Creek Barrel Select and Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select Batch 184 Bottle 08411. Made tasty Old Fashioned cocktails with the Maker's and the Forty Creek. I finished the Woodford neat. Out of respect I couldn't put that in a cocktail. And, finished one of my favorite bourbons Noah's Mill around Christmas. I'm going to replace that one for sure.

Jim Beam Devils Cut. I heard about de procedure how they extracted the last whiskey from the barrel's oak. I like the strong vanille taste. I was really surprised. And its not expensive. Its not the part you share with angels but its the part you take from the devil.

@FMichael - well i'm fairly new to single malts and after loving HP 12 thought i'd step it up to the much talked about 18. As expected it was more sherried than the 12, but searching for flavours and smells besides the 'sherryness' was difficult for me. Occassionally there were moments where everything would come together and the palate and nose opened up dramatically to the other intricacies, but i found these moments too few and far between to justify an extra $100 AUD or so on top of the 12.

@Chookster, please read the many comments on this subject elsewhere on this site, if you can find them. Highland Park 18 can take 3 to 4 months after the bottle is opened to be at its best. Drink a dram now, then put it aside and try it in April, then in May. See the difference. I will bet it will be HUGE.

Thank you for that, Chookster. I bought my first bottle of HP18 a few weeks ago and have been having trouble understanding all the accolades and "best in the world" praise it gets. Certainly not a bad dram, rich and full, but not the wondrous quality I expected. When I've bought such hyped whiskies in the past - Talisker 18, Lagavulin 16 and Old Pulteney 21, for example - they have lived up to and even exceeded their reputations, whereas the HP18 has not. I'll follow your advice and hope for the best. Thanks!

@Chookster: +1 What @Victor said!

If you have a large decanter tip the H/P 18 into it, none to gently either, bubble it in as fast as your funnel will allow. Set it aside, for, as Victor has suggested a few months and you will be amazed - What will astound you is that the last couple of pours from the decanter will be extraordinary. Keep it in the cool dark!

A large dumpy, straight sided Whisky specific decanter (Webb Corbet and many others) with a large square air-space with 2 to 3 inches of air will works well. Crystal is good, come with a ground stopper and best of all last for ever. Antique and second hand stores are a great source of good glass.

I've done this mamy times, and this is how it is! Whiskies of supreme quality with so much more to give take quite a bit longer to give them up. Don't think you have been short changed, in fact, grab a H/P 12yo. which you can plug away at while you wait for the 18yo. to 'blossom' - You wont be disappointed!

Cheers and Good Luck!

@Pizaro Another thing to keep in mind is when the reviews were published. HP18 has changed a lot over the years, a not for the better. That's not to say it isn't good whisky, only that there were some older versions that were truly worthy of the hype.

@maltygirl, BNJ is quite delicious and extremely easy drinking. Please take a look at my recent review of it. Unfortunately it is not sold in the US, and apparently not in Canada either, so I have to look into once again getting someone to hand carry me some from the UK. In Texas, maybe you can get it in the mail. Here it is a felony.

This one was an enchantress, an absolute stunner. Masterson’s 10 Year Old Straight Rye. I'd never owned a 96.5 before this one and could not bare to let her go; alas I set her free. It's that good, I bought two more.. – Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2013 Rating 96.5 - "a magnificent whisky without any shadow of doubt."

@Chookster As our esteemed Victor already noted - the HP 18 does in fact open up a bit after a few months (took his advice myself)...Another HP that I think you might like is the 15 yr expression; aged in American Oak barrels that held sherry when compared to it's 12 yr, and 18 yr siblings which were both aged in Spanish Oak that held sherry......A different dram indeed, but honestly the 15 yr might just be my favorite outta the 3.
