@maltmate302 I am very jealous of the selections you made. Also wish that we were allowed to ship spirits here as I think the "rising postal cost" excuse might a great buffer when explaining why I NEED more scotch to my dearly beloved!

@maltmate302 I have 2 bottles of the Millstone 100 Rye, one about 1/3 full and the other stashed. I really liked it, very earthy and fruity, delicious stuff. Picked them up when they were discounted at the LCBO for about $75 cdn.

My boss picked me up a High West Rendezvous Rye in Alberta(Running low on my last bottle) and my sister picked me up a Benromach 10 in Nova Scotia. (LCBO sold out in 10 minutes, the whole 32 they brought in to Summerhill, what a joke)

@Astroke Benromach 10 in short supply? Interesting. It should be a common expression. If you like that I'll have to save you a sample of the 100 proof we'll be trying at the summit

@Nozinan so sad that the LCBO is so inept. However they do know how gouge with with the best.

@Astroke that's good to know about the Millstone. Never tried it myself but it's had some very decent reviews. The distilleries in mainland Europe seem to be putting out some high quality juice these days.

@maltmate302 Was about $115.00 Cdn in Ontario when it was first released and did not sell at all. When the price was discounted to $70.00 it sold out quickly. Lot 40 on steroids.

Passover is over and I can acquire new items again... but that's another story.

Today the LCBO stealth-released the Ileach CS in select stores in the GTA, National Capital region and, for some reason, Owen Sound. There were 18 bottles at one store and at the time of purchase of my bottle this was the 6th one left.

A big thank you to a friend for making this acquisition possible and allowing me to take possession of it tonight.

I know reviews on Connosr are mixed but I also think there are a few of us who haven't tried it yet and I'm hoping to open it in a group. That's the why.

Picked up three bottles today:

  • Highwood Ninety (Canadian)

  • Wiser's Legacy (Canadian)

  • Elijah Craig 12 Year Old (Bourbon)

The "why" for the two Canadians is primarily reviews. Wiser's Legacy is getting raves everywhere and I've never tried it, so I figured it was about time. Highwood Ninety had actually been flying under my radar entirely until I joined Connosr and @Spitfire, @Nozinan and @paddockjudge brought it to my attention. It sounded pretty good to me and wasn't much money, so I added it to the "to buy" list. This is the thread in question: connosr.com/wall/discussion/…

And the bourbon I bought because I've never tried bourbon before, and reviews here seemed favourable. Well, except for @Victor's, but I decided to take a chance on it anyway. I was choosing between it and Knob Creek 9 Years Old, and decided on the Elijah Craig because the bottle was cooler. ;) Yeah, I know. I just couldn't make up my mind and figured bottle design was as good a tie breaker as any.

@Nelom Good choices, those 2 Canadian's are both in my bar at all times. Having an EC12 right now although the 12 will be gone soon.

@Nelom, what is the bottle code (near base of bottle) on your Wiser's Legacy? the code can easily be discovered by holding a light to the face of the square bottle, or shine it through the bottle.

I am currently sipping batch L16008. It is juicy and chewy and smacks of black licorice. It is a nice whisky, but not 'my' Legacy. My Legacy is silky, spicy, dry and rye forward.

Astroke replied

@paddockjudge I have that same batch, replace these bi-monthly as a necessity. Going to have a pour right now because of your post. I was going to shut it down for the night until you chimed in :)

My sister is picking me up The Arran 18 tomorrow. Have a feeling that my final count of bottles will be around a dozen or so on my return trip to Ontario. Maybe one of my Connosr buddies can drive along side of me in a black Trans Am.

@Astroke When you say "the 12 will be gone soon" are you referring to your specific bottle, or have they discontinued it?

@paddockjudge The bottle code of the Wiser's Legacy I bought is L15009 EW1154.

Astroke replied

@paddockjudge certainly the licorice, clove and the usual sweetness. I like it but the previous bottle did seem better if I remember. Getting close enough to the end for this one so I will check out the batch # before I pick it up.

@Nelom There is talk that the EC 12 YO will be discontinued. Same with the Knob Creek 9 YO single Barrel.

Nelom replied

@Nozinan Well, that's slightly grumpsome. I'm almost hoping I don't like the EC 12 now. :P Would be disappointing to fall in love with it, only to have it be discontinued. Hopefully there's no substance to those rumours.

@JPwhiskysteve

Just bought a few bottles of Suntory Hibiki 17 near my house. It's rare to find even here in Japan. Got to snap it it while you can. The other month I found a 21 which was very unusual to find.

Astroke replied

@Nelom Only the 12 year age statement will be discontinued. EC will always be around as it is a very succesful mid-shelf Bourbon in the US

@Astroke EC,in going NAS, could fall victim to the whisky bubble bursting just like any other brand.

Although I agree with you that it is likely to stick around, it is a shame they are moving to younger whiskies. It makes me worried they'll take the 12 off the barrel proof. And the younger it is, the less likely it will have ABVs in nosebleed territory.....

paddockjudge replied

@Nelom, it's not a rumor, it is fact. Knob Creek 9 has gone the way of the Dodo; it is now NAS. EC12 is the next to lose its age statement as did Eagle Rare.

@Pete1969
Pete1969 replied

Knob Creek now states PATIENTLY AGED not tried it yet but did like the 9 year old.

Eagle Rare still carries an age but for some reason when they dropped the single barrel from the 10 they changed the labelling from the neck and now it is on the back. Still basically the same product but from what I have read they can not guarantee single barrel status due to bottling method and dropped it for transparency, something to do with dumping single barrels through the same tubes one after another meaning a small residue from last barrel gets into next bottling run.

Elijah Craig the Younger has already lost its 12 year age statement where I live in Maryland.

And...the Older, newly re-released 18 YO, is hard to locate. There are still somewhere, in some far off galaxy, a few bottles of Elijah Craig 20 YO, 21 YO, and 23 YO. Not on the shelves now, though...

Sic transit the previously readily available and readily purchasable EC Age Statements.

Re: EC 12 and Knob Creek 9 YO losing their age statements

There's still plenty of bottles on the shelves around here, especially of the Knob Creek. I guess maybe I should hurry up and try them both and perhaps stock up a little if they end up being to my liking. I was planning on giving Wiser's Legacy a go tonight, but now I think it'll be the EC 12.

@Victor Is Wiser's Legacy on the chopping block too? I feel bad for those who really like it.

Do you know if the ECBP is also going to lose its age statement? It's so hard to find if you live in Canada it would be impossible to stock up.

@ABV

@Nelom, This is absolutely true. Elijah Craig no longer sports the big red 12 on the front label, replaced by a barrel. If you see a 12 in the description on the back of the bottle, it is still a 12 year old. All the bottles in my area of Virginia both 750 and 1.75 now have no age statement anywhere as hoarders/collectors have snatched them. Eagle Rare is no longer a single barrel. Buffalo Trace no longer has an age statement, of 8 or 9 years I believe. Glenlivet 12 is slowly but surely disappearing replaced by Founders Reserve NAS. Laphraoig 18, no more liquid exists. Unless there is a last shipment coming for late 2016, it is all done with the return of the 15 yo.
