@OlJas I certainly am jealous of your shops! Our Swedish monopoly has a superb selection available for ordering but they never stock anything other than basic malts so finding old stuff or IBs is virtually impossible once they're discontinued from production

I just picked a Johnnie Walker Select Casks (rye finished). I got this because the reviews looked good, I love rye and scotch. It was on sale at my local Costco for $30!! I also picked up a Glen Scotia 'Double Cask'. I've always wanted to try Glen Scotia, I read a review that said it had an "engine oil" note. That, and the price had me sold.

A new tasting pack has just been released by Highland Park which consists of 5 x 5cl bottles. The ages are 12, 15, 18, 25 and 30 years old. I don't normally buy any OB's of over 25 years of age due to the price but I felt that a cost of 76 pounds for whiskies of this quality was worth paying on this occasion. I'm very much looking forward to having a head to head with the older whiskies. I also added a G&M 2006 Bunnahabhain to the order as it was quite cheap and Ralfy recommended!

@Alexsweden they're in the green welly stop in the UK at the moment on their homepage. I'm not sure if they export to Sweden, perhaps you can check. An extra bonus I just discovered is that the 25 is the pre 2012 version at 48.1% which is very well regarded.

I have a 25 at 53.5% - do you know how old it might be? I think the person who gave it to me picked it up in the 90s...

@Nozinan I'd have to know which independent bottler it came from or is it an OB. Then I would go to Whiskybase and match the ABV to your bottle in the HP section. Nevertheless what a wonderful gift to receive. If it was bought in the 90's this whisky is probably from the golden age of distilling and should be superb. It's also worth a hell of a lot of money in 2016.

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve, 60% ABV, 12 year old barrel #3415 from Shawan Liquors. This was a gift from @Maddie. Thanks sis.

@maltmate302, that's great that you are getting that HP combo pack which includes the 25 yo and the 30 yo.

Tomorrow is a big day for me. I have a family reunion and I will get all the beauties I bought from Alberta. My niece has done the transportation. So I will get Springbang 13 green label, Hazelburn R & K, Cambelton Loch 21 yo, Ardbeg Dark Cove, Octomore 6.3 and 7.1 and La Bastille for my wife. I am also planning an Epic Tasting for them. Lots of fun in the forecast!

@maltmate302 It's an OB. As for selling it, it's part of a set of bottles that have value beyond monetary consideration. One day it will either be opened or I will leave it to my kids who can do whatever they want with it because it will have no special value to them...

maltmate302 replied

@Nozinan I think I've located it. I think it's a dumpy shaped bottle from 1995 bottle code L4449. It's value is reputedly $1077 US. The whiskybase community marks it at 91.88 which is very high on that website. Also Serge gives it a 90 on whiskyfun. I suggest you share something as good as with your kids in the future .The whisky is too good not to have a taste of. It's a 1970 distillate!

Wow! I'm sure he didn't pay that much for it. I can't confirm the bottle code (nothing etched on the bottle). He had probably over 100 bottles like that, of different spirits...

Well, I may have to host a special tasting sometime.

Well, I just returned from my second family vacation to Myrtle Beach. This time I returned with several bottles.

Grant’s Family Reserve 1.75L – Why? To quote @Victor it is “the universal solvent.” And it was only $26.99 plus tax.

Colonel E. H. Taylor Barrel Proof 63.75% (127.5 Proof). Why? Because there was only one bottle left and it seems like the hardest E. H. Taylor to get your hands on. It seems like some reviewers put it in the same category as George T. Stagg . . . or maybe just Stagg Jr. I certainly hope so.

Lagavulin 8 year old 48% 200th Anniversary Release. Why? I have been anxiously awaiting this bottle to arrive in the states. I have had my hands in several different pots trying to acquire a bottle or two. While in Myrtle Beach I happened to wander into a liquor store I never really visit. And amazement of amazement there was one lonely bottle on the shelf. My wife asked if there were any others bottles in the back . . . nope. This was the last one. We hit two more local stores trying to find more. Sadly, the other stores said they hadn’t even seen it yet.

Pikesville 110. Overpaid through the LCBO online purchasing but this one has been on my wish list for some time now.

@Astroke $90 is overpaying? Maybe I've already reset my point of reference, but it seems reasonable for a high proof rye. $55 USD in the US online, so maybe a little more after exchange...

My haul from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. I am sure I broke a few inter-provincial limit laws of transporting Spirits. So many fair priced SM's, Rum's and Bourbon's at The Port Store in Halifax. Half of these were picked up by my sister over the last 6 months but those Glendronach 15 Revival's were a must have as well as the Masterson's Rye Batch 001. Could have come back with 20 more but would required deeper pockets and bigger SUV.

@Nozinan Overpaying may have been the wrong phrase. Actually I did not give the price point on this one a second thought.

@Astroke Very nice haul. A bit blurry but I'm sure that won't affect the taste...would love to read a list as I'm currently only buying vicariously.

I thought I could make out the Benromach 100/10 on the far left, was I right? Such an inspired dram...

@Nozinan I have a Ben 10 100 but I did want the regular 10 as well. This will conclude my SM purchases for quite some time.

Bruichladdich 3D3 The Norrie Campbell Tribute Bottling. I love Bruichladdich and hadn't heard of this bottle. Owner of the store said he bought it in 2007 when he opened cause it looked good. No one ever bought it. Well we had to fix that. Busted the cork when I tried to open it. Some Twitter followers talked me through saving it. It's got peat. A precursor of the Port Charlotte. Very nice.

The whisky I have been patiently waiting for for over 2 years is finally available on a pre order. This is, of course, the Kilkerran 12. This whisky is presented in the classical Springbank style of 70% bourbon cask 30% sherry cask at 46% with NCF. I honestly believe that , in time, this will be regarded as one of the great entry level single malts and I can't wait to have a taste of it.

@maltmate302 , great news on the Kilkerran! That's the first spotting I've heard of. Where did you find it?

8 years ago 0

maltmate302 replied

@OlJas I found it available for pre order at the Green Welly Stop in the UK so I ordered three. On the Glengyle website they state that the official release date will be August 12 so not long now. You should get them in the States in a month or two.

Did not purchase the bottle but traded for a 2013 Four Roses Small Batch 125th Ltd Ed. Cost me dearly but it is/was a bucket list Whiskey for me that I may never have had the opportunity again.
