2 days ago....my last dram of Compas Box Peat Monster. Despite being by itself for so long, it remained smoky, citrusy, and yummy.

Octomore Orpheus 2.2. As delicious as it was, it was not easy to make this bottle last for 11 months. I will happily buy another bottle of Orpheus for $ 200, but it may be very difficult to find one at that price going forward.

@Victor A pity! That Orpheus was a gem, indeed

Ardbeg Corryvreckan. Bought it last July. Just reviewed it before finishing it, (incidentally I found the overall taste and experience to be quite different from my first dram from the bottle).

I hate finishing a bottle. It's not like beer where you just grab another from the fridge. With whisky I feel like I've actually lost something.

Just finished off the last of a bottle of old cognac, and an all-time favorite. It lost a step in the end, but it was still among the best things that I've had. Now on to polishing off a few nearly ended bottles -- starting with the 2011 Thomas H. Handy!

Wild Turkey 101Rye: It's got a lot going for it! Taste, style, overall balance and among the Whiskeys available here in Aust. far and away the best value. Occasionally, I'll feel like two drams, instead of my usual generous pour of a Malt - I head for W/T 101 Rye first, to savour, while I decide which part of Scotland I will visit this time.

More and more this is seeming like a pretty good idea!

Slainte!

J & B Rare I bought in around 1979. It still tastes good after being open quite a few years...I like that 43% ABV at which they used to bottle it.

Finished two bottles last week. The Laddie Ten that I got from my girlfriend last Christmas. And a bottle of Laphroaigh 10y. Two Islay's, two beautiful whisky's, but so very different.

Replaced the Laddie with a Springbank 10y and the Laphroaigh with a Quarter Cask. Not a bad substitution I think! Although I really miss the rawness of the Laphroaigh 10y.

@AKGcandlefish why should we hate you? Don't most whisky experts (the real ones) say "drink it your way" and "don't let anyone tell you how to drink your whisky"?

@AKGcandlefish nothing wrong with that, my friend. You drank it the way you like it. All that matters.

@Nozinan and @teebone673, actually it was the first time I'd tried it that way. Saw the idea on Glenmorangie's Facebook page and thought it was worth a try. It was actually quite good. Wouldn't do it every time, but it made for a refreshing Sunday afternoon dram.

Just finished Old Rip Van Winkle 10 yo 90 proof. Just a wonderful bourbon :) . Word is that there will be no more 90 proof. Then again not many like it. But I do !! Actually, I'm beginning to like bourbons more than scotch. When I want to treat myself, I'll often reach for a bourbon. Never thought it would be possible.

In the past three weeks, I have finished off:

  • Evan Williams Single Barrel (2000) 'Binny's Handpicked'. This to me is a bourbon that shows off the true essence of a rye-based mashbill bourbon. At 43.3% it is slightly 'thin', but the nice trade-off is that the base bourbon flavours of oak, vanilla, and caramel are highlighted in a nice clean/clear manner that, while very accessible to new bourbon drinkers, is still very enjoyable for all who like/love bourbon. At/around $30 in many US stores, the EWSB line is a good value purchase. The bottle remained consistently good throughout its two year lifespan.

  • Koval Lion's Pride Dark Wheat Whiskey, a 100% wheat whiskey aged (I believe) in quarter barrels. This Chicago distillery puts out quite a line of single grain, organic/kosher, whiskies. The youth of this one definitely shone through, but a nice creamy note, sweetened with a bit of banana, carried through. This bottle improved/smoothed out the rougher edges over the last 1/2 of its 2+ year lifespan. Next time I come across the Lion's Pride line, I will likely pick up their 47th Ward (four grain) whiskey.

  • The next three weeks will likely see the end of my first bottle of Port Charlotte An Turas Mor, and Parker's Heritage Collection (4th edition) 10 yo wheat mashbill bourbon. On the bright side, my bottle of the PHC 5th edition (10 yo rye mashbill bourbon finished in a cognac cask) will likely be opened this coming weekend (finally, after over a year of staring at me from my bourbons shelf!)

I am just now finishing my bottle of Contarf Single Malt, which was made at Bushmills. By my lights this has to be the mildest malt whisky in existence. I like it anyway. Barley, barley, and more barley...and you do taste some vanilla. Bottle opened for 2 years, a lot of honey sweetness develops, also.

All Whisky is Kosher according to the London authority. Even, according to them, sherry or wine cask matured spirits. Doesn't make sense to me, but it makes it easier to buy good scotch for one of my colleagues.
