@maltmate302 , way to work that system! Too bad that it's such an effort to buy those where you are, though.
Let us all know how the batch 8 turns out. If it's more in the classic Laphroaig style (ashy, robust, not too sweet), I'll probably stock up when it hits my local stores. And by that, I mean Binny's down in Illinois where it's been $60 forever and will, hopefully, stay that price for a while longer yet.

My nephew and his wife have just purchase their first home. For a house warming party I wanted to get a few bottles of whiskey. Thus far I have bought a Nikka Pure Malt and a Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. I just need to come up with a third choice, preferrably a Scotch.

@DaveM , I suggest something that includes their big year in the bottle label somehow, like maybe the 2016 Laphroaig Cairdeas if they like peat.

@OlJas I'm afraid Islay whisky is not in my families vocabulary. I was thinking of perhaps Glenmorangie or something more middle of the road.

Just bought a bottle of new JW Green (the third edition). Reason? Here is my rational: The original JWG served me well with easy going daily dram (I would rate it 88 point) until discontinued a few years ago. Then for a brief period of time came with the newer edition with simplified bottling design (no more box, no more cork cap), and it tasted sweeter and less peaty than before (I would rate it 83 point). Today I saw some 20+ bottles stacked on my local liquor store, was told it's temporary distribution, etc. So I bought it again. It has box and cork cap, packaging design is more similar to the second edition. Haven't crack it open yet. Maybe one day will do some vertical tasting.

@Webb Careful....too much vertical tasting of too many versions may leave you horizontal...

I just ordered a Springbank 12 CS Burgundy wood at 53.5% abv. This one has been matured entirely in fresh burgundy casks and I've been after one for a couple of weeks but it's kept eluding me. So glad to finally secure one. Also got yet another Aberlour Abunadh last.night . I'm not sure of the batch number but for 31 pounds I couldn't resist it!

Just starting out on this great journey in to single malt whisky and all though I have had Talisker before, many moons ago, I wanted to add a bottle to actually enjoy. Amazon had a flash sale and got the 10 year old, 70cl, for £23 with free delivery.

@cjos66
I think that classifies as a steal of a deal, considering it's $100 here at the KGBO. I see 57 North is listed here now too, but close to $160.

@cjos66 I bought 2 myself yesterday on the Deal of the Day package.I was thinking of picking up a Talisker Skye as well for 19.99 but decided against it. There's many good Father's Day deals about at the moment!

I just spent a nice five day weekend in Tokyo. I had picked up the following:
Three bottles of the Nikka Coffey Malt
One bottle of the Nikka Coffey Grain
and
Two Bottles of the Chivas 12yo, Mizunara.
Why? I couldn't really afford the aged stated whiskies I saw, and I didn't see many. Setting that aside, I enjoy all of the stuff I had purchased, surprisingly the Chivas 12yo matured in Mizunara.

Purchased The GlenDronach Allardice today in Williamsburg VA. Natural coloring, 96 proof, pre-1996 old stock like the 21 Parliament, big sherry. Saving for a special occasion with friends.

@OlJas -- The Chivas 12yo Mizunara is definitely one I would recommend. I wasn't too much of a fan of the 12yo Chivas, until I tried their Mizunara 'expression.' I am guessing that it is finished in Mizunara casks, but I am not sure for how long. Anyway, it has an enjoyable spicy-ness (no peppery spice) or herbally nose and taste to it. If you know anyone going to Japan or go yourself, you can find this in stores as well as duty free.

@ajjarrett I forgot to mention the bottling I got are 700ml and 40%ABV. I am sure this whisky would be even better if it were 45 or 46% ABV, but I would suggest trying it anyway.

Laga 16, almost embarrassed to say this is the first bottle of this I have purchased. My Islay journey continues. I really like it although it goes down way too easy.
I think me next will be the Ardbeg Uigeadail (but not in Ontario) or Bowmore Tempest VI
8 years ago 0
@Astroke - Glad to hear you made the plunge and are enjoying Laga 16. I'm also pondering purchasing my first bottle, was a little embarrassed myself to admit that I've yet to try it. I agree, Uigeadail is fantastic but a little too pricey for us Ontarians. I've also been considering Bowmore Tempest VI or Laimrig.

@Mancub I am having a Laimrig as I write, beyond fantastic for me. I have since purchased a second bottle but Tempest is my next buy. Laimrig was $76 in Nova Scotia and of course $120 at the LCBO. Still worth it IMO.

The only Laga 16 I ever bought was a 200 cc bottle. It was not bad but price vs quality does not add up for me.
I would consider the TEMPEST V AND VI to be pretty much the same in terms of quality, and very close in flavour. I'm a little disappointed that the price went up about 10 dollars between the 2 releases, only months apart...

I bought a bottle of Teeling Poitin and one of Bernheim Original. I am preparing an educational tasting for newcomers and I bought the Poitin for them to taste a distillat that have not see any wood and the Bernheim for them to dicover wheat whisky. I am planning to present them some 100% rye whiskies, some Bourbon with low and high rye content, a buckwheat whisky and then some malt, unpeated, peated, with sherry finish and wine finish. That will be only in a month, but if I want things to make sense, I have to planned ahead.

Well, I recently picked up an extra bottle of Ardbeg Dark Cove (standard) at 46.5% because my first bottle is just so lovely.
However, I just picked up three bottles of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof batch #11, 69.7% ABV
I have been fortunate to get my hands on a bottle of each release so far (except for #3 which I have been able to taste thanks to @Victor). I just got a call from my "guy" who said he had three bottles for me. Usually he only is able to save one for me. I am exceedingly grateful. It sounds like this will be my last hook up because Virginia has moved to the lottery system for ALL high demand whiskies (like Pappy, BTAC . . . and apparently ECBP now). Oh well. The good old days of bourbon hunting are gone at last.
I am hoping this is as good as batch #9
8 years ago 0
@Nock, good going on locking up 3 bottles of Batch # 11 ECBP. You really can't count on being able to get these in the future.

@Victor @Nock
Glad I have 2 then. Though 2 different batches (69.9% and 70.1%). They seem plentiful in Seattle where my friend picked them up for me. I'd feel a lot better about opening them if I thought I might be able to replace them (at least with a new batch) but these gems, like Laphroaig 10CS and others, simply never make to Canada unless they are muled.... FOR SHAME!

I surprinsingly bought a bottle of Glenmorangie Original. Surprisingly because all Glenmo used to display a chemical flavor for me. I tasted the Original a few weeks ago at a restaurant and it was free of this chemical and was quite good for a basic Scotch. It is kind of an Archetype, this one, so if after a while I get bored by it, it will become a terrific base for my vatting experiences.
I also bought the first single malt from the province of Quebec called L'esprit du malt from the Silvo distillery. This a light one, not over complex, but very well balance and very affordable. This quite promising and I am looking forward to drink some older version.

I didn't exactly buy it, I got it as a gift. My brother in law gifted me the glenmorangie dornoch. First impression is rather nice. A super sweet nose and some more mature dark flowery notes on the palate. I'll be working on a review..

I just received 2 bottles of Bruichladdich 12 CS at 51.4% from Whiskybroker. There's a wonderful heavily sherried look to this whisky, almost Abunadh like and when I saw a picture of it I ordered 2 on the spot. Lucky I did because it sold out in less than 3 hours! I also added a cheap 9 year-old bottle of Girvan single grain whisky, which has had some decent reviews, to the order.

Hibiki 17 and Taketsuru 17 and 21. It's taken me 7 months to find any and I live down the road from the distillery of YAMAZAKI in Osaka. I bought it for investment but I'm very tempted to open the taketsuru 17 or 21. If anyone is interested and is coming to Japan get in touch I can help.

Kilchoman cask strength (121.2 proof), first-fill bourbon cask selected by Binny's Beverage Depot in Chicago.
I am a big fan of Kilchoman and I like it when distilleries play around with different types of wood. I think it makes for a more interesting experience.

Finally found me some Elijah Craig Barrel Proof ... Left 1 on the shelf and took one.
