@OlJas Amazing you both got the same stuff on the same day. But clearly your purchase was better organized....

@Spitfire,
is your E. H. Taylor Single Barrel Bourbon bottled at Barrel Proof?
8 years ago 0
@paddockjudge Both the Single Barrel and the Small Batch are 100 proof, so I doubt itl

@Spitfire , copy and paste, blank spaces between lines, ALT+7 for bullets!

@OlJas Thanks. Will see if that works on my iPad:
Hmmm...not seeming to. I assume the iPad just isn't completely compatible with this site. (Remember, I'm on the road right now--then again, I use my iPad for most of my net surfing at home, too.)

@Spitfire
If you put two blank lines between each paragraph, and put a number at the beginning, you get bullets. and that will work on the ipad..
For example:
this is the first item
This is the second item...

Nozinan, thanks

1 I think that you have to put a period after the number. if you don't you get a number.

I just got a bottle of the new Kilkerran 12 year old. I find it to be exactly the way whisky should be. It has a decent age statement with no fancy or complicated finishes or aging processes, it has no colouring, it has no chill-filtration, it is a higher strength (46%)... It isn't my favourite whisky, but for a standard entry level whisky, I think this is the future. More distilleries should look toward malts like these from Kilkerran (owned by Springbank). Highly recommended.

Evan Williams Bottled in Bond
Why? I'm honestly not entirely sure. :) A while back I bought the Single Barrel and didn't care for it at all, but I've heard some good things about their Bottled in Bond and I thought maybe the additional 6.7% ABV might punch it up a bit and make it more enjoyable. Anyway, it's usually not carried by the LCBO, but they've got it in for a limited time so I figured I'd give it a shot.

@Nelom Hmmm...the EV Single Barrel Vintage is one of my favourite bourbons.

Much like @OCeallaigh , I just bought a Kilkerran 12. Why?
•It's surely the one bottle I've anticipated the most of the course of my whisky career (est. 2009). I love the Campbeltown style and "idea." I've dug all the Work in Progress releases I've had (to varying degrees, of course) and it's been fun following along toward this flagship 12.
•Solid reviews!
•The price was right thanks to my local specialty realtor having a 10% all scotch sale, which made it about $65.
•It finally appeared on the shelves of said retailer, where the spirits manager has always been really good about humoring (and sometimes even indulging) my requests for more Kilkerran on his shelves. The 12 had already appeared at other stores, but I wanted to give this store a chance to get it in and earn my business first.
•I don't know when it'll happen, but I'm thinking of organizing a Campbeltown Death Match for my whisky club, in which I'll blind-pour the Kilkerran 12, the old (disco cow) Glen Scotia 12, the Longrow Peated NAS, and the Springbank 10 for my club buddies to vote on to choose which one becomes the new club bottle. (Sorry Hazelburn.)
And while I was there, I also grabbed the Kilkerran WIP #6 Sherry Wood. Why? See above.

@Spitfire It was a 2007 bottling and I ended up giving away more than half of the bottle to Nozinan. Or trading is probably more apt of a description. Although I get the feeling he was more obliging my desire to get it out of my cabinet the same way he felt I was helping him by taking some Glen Breton off his hands.
And yeah, your love of the single barrel was one of the reasons I picked up the bottle in the first place. I believe you called it "ambrosia." :) But no worries, in no way do I blame you. I read plenty of other opinions that praised it as well. Sometimes people's palates disagree over a particular expression, that's all.
I will admit that part of me am curious to try a pour of the Single Barrel again, seeing as how I enjoyed the Bottled in Bond. It would be interesting to compare them side-by-side.

@Nelom, do not forget that single barrel products are unique to the individual barrel. Even the same vintage year Evan Williams Single Barrels will show differences.
As for the Evan Williams White Label Bottled in Bond, what I've had of it has been very solid, and a super buy. BIB whiskeys are often ignored because most of them are 4 years old, but you can get enormous flavour in 4 years at 50% ABV.

@Victor Fair point regarding Single Barrel. It's entirely possible that I bought a non-representative bottling, I suppose that's the risk you take when you get any Single Barrel release. Although I must say that for me Four Roses Single Barrel so far has remained remarkably similar from bottle to bottle. Knock on wood, as it's one of my favourites.
And yeah, BiB expressions are definitely worth seeking out. I've only tried a handful, but they've all been worthwhile. My favourite BiB I think is Rittenhouse Rye. I hear good things about Old Grand Dad BiB, but sadly only the standard 80 proof version is available here. One day.

@Nelom Fair enough.
I've had several bottles of EV "Single Barrel Vintage 2004," which I believe is the year it was distilled (bottle says "put into oak," FWIW). Each has been excellent.
A year ago, I was in a big city liquor store with a large selection, and I mentioned I really liked the EV SBV. When I said it was 2004, the sales guy said they'd run our of stock on that and were selling the 2006 version; he then suggested that if I could still get the 2004, I should buy several bottles because the future private market for that bottling would be lucrative.
Hmmm...maybe I should buy a few more (I think a local store might have one 2004 left...).

@Spitfire I have also enjoyed several bottles of the 2004 vintage. I also enjoyed the 2003. A couple of months ago I poured 1/3 bottle of 2003 into 1/2 bottle of 2004. This blend is delicious.

Angel's Envy, why-because I am an idiot who again trusted someone to bring me back a bottle from the US (they offered to do it without any pressure from me). This person was going to Vegas. I did my due diligence and actually called Total Wine on Sumerlin and gave them a list. They (TWS) said most of my list was available although some were in short supply.No big deal as my list was 13 bottles long. I said to the person you must go to TWS or don't bother. Imagine my surprise while I was peeling off $113 Cad for a $45 US bottle of AE. Looks like the price on the strip is $83 US for this aperitif Bourbon and it was not on my list. When you are waiting for ECBP or Barrell Bourbon batch 5 or 6, this one does not cut it. Why can't people execute simple written instructions and these instructions had an escape clause, not on the list bring back nothing. Imagine how long my list is for $133 cad bottles I would rather have than this one.

@Astroke I feel your pain. I asked a friend to bring me a Caol Ila CS (G&M) from Halifax and he brought me back a Glenmorangie Signet. At least though, I only (pre)paid for the Caol Ila, not the Signet, but he knew nothing of Scotch and the store gave him the wrong bottle...

@Nozinan Well I think I have learned my lesson. My faith in people to do what they say they will do has no bounds I guess. I have now put out $280.00 for 3 bottles I did not want nor were on my lists. I thought I would check with TW on Sumerlin in Vegas and they still have Willett Family Estate Rye (#1 on my list), ECBP, Barrell Bourbon-3 different batches)

@Astroke, sounds like you just need more-reliable "friends"/acquaintances.
7 years ago 0
@Astroke I actually picked up two of the three form your list while I was in the States. Willett 3 Year Rye and ECBP Batch 11. If we are ever in the same neck of the woods and I have opened them, you are welcome to taste some.

@Victor They mean well and they always approach me. I will in the future say thanks but no thanks. This one was the worst as I had all but arranged the WFE pick up with TW. Had she arrived with Barrell Boubon I would have still been happy. Angel's Envy Bourbon, really? I would gift it for Christmas but I an worried I would offend the recipient.

@mscottydunc Thanks for the thought. I will bite the border duty bullet the second I know one of these Whiskey's are in upstate New York. I mean why not since apparently I will pay $113 for Angel's Envy.
7 years ago 0
@Astroke, you can probably trade that bottle of Angel's Envy. A lot of people really like it a lot, though I am not one of them.
7 years ago 0
@Astroke Man, I feel for ya.
I've done the same "due diligence" you have, contacting TW or other retailers looking for bottles unavailable in Canada in order to instruct my wife when she's travelling--but to date, she has been very reliable, and has only purchased bottles on my list. She did pick up one bottle on her own, though--"Butterscotch Shine Corn Whiskey," from Dark Corner distillery in Greenville SC. Thankfully the bottle is a mini, as it's pretty much undrinkable...

Pretty decent sales going on I picked up a Makers46 for $29 and Lagavulin 16 for $55.... Still looking for a couple of bourbons though.

2016 Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye, 63.1% ABV, and Old Rip Van Winkle 10 YO bourbon, 53.5% ABV. Why buy them? Because they are great whiskies that I will always want to drink, because they were at a dealer's and not a scalper's price, and because one never knows for sure how likely one is to obtain future supply of either one of them.
