2017 Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye, 2017 Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year old bourbon, and Old Weller Antique 107.

Why? these are great whiskeys which I was able, thanks completely to my sister, to buy from dealers at dealer prices.

@Nozinan, yes, I have now officially met and exceeded 10 bottles of whisk(e)y purchased for myself since 15 September 2016. Those are bottles # 10, 11, and 12. The OWA107 was a bit of an after-thought because it was offered from the dealer.

@Victor wow...2 years early.

But I would have ordered you some @Nozinan if you had passed up such an opportunity...

Just ordered a bottle of Kilkerran 12. Why? Two reasons. Firstly, because I'm on a bit of a Campbeltown kick, and I've got a bottle of Kilkerran WIP 7 CS Bourbon cask waiting to be opened next year, and it'll be nice to have tried the standard bottling first (even though the WIP was made before the standard 12). Secondly, I have been on the search of a cheaper, but enjoyable, scotch to slow down my progress through my favoured bottles. After much searching and reading, I figured it wasn't worth my while to waste money on a bottle that I wasn't going to really enjoy - so for 20-40% more I can have a decent whisky, such as this Kilkerran 12. I paid $72 NZ (Google tells me this is just under $50USD, $63 CAD, 37 Pounds).

@Hewie $88 in Ontario. I'm thinking of letting it go, because I can't have everything in my cabinet. It does sound good though.

I don't have the same point of view in terms of buying something to slow down the depletion of the "good stuff". If I were to do that I would do it with equally good stuff. I don't have enough liver cells to waste on stuff that isn't top notch. Obviously every dram I take (for enjoyment, not for education or review) doesn't have to be expensive or rare. But it has to be really good.

@Nozinan I hear what you're saying. It's not the depletion of my liver cells I'm concerned about - it's the lack of funds to purchase what I enjoy! I'd certainly rather have less of better quality and more enjoyable whisky than more of mediocre quality ones.

@Hewie either way it's a limited commodity... so make sure it is all good and worth it.

I think you've made a good decision @Hewie

I cracked the seal on a bottle of Kilkerran 12 about 2 weeks. I was a bit perplexed by it at first. But I now think it's a great whisky. It just needs a serious amount of time in the glass to open (30 mins plus seems to work). Very good value for he price.

I think Campbeltown is the best whisky producing region in Scotland at the moment.

@Nozinan I thoroughly enjoy kilkerran 12 yo. My latest purchase is Glenlivet 18yo. $30 off at the olde lcbo this weekend.

@Nozinan - I'm paying £35 for Kilkerran so that's a good deal! I may do a review on my bottle soon - it's an interesting one but very, industrial, shall we say. Not necessarily a bad thing but it's one that every time I sip I have a different take on.

re the OP - Just bought a Benromach 15, Port Charlotte Scottish Barley Heavily Peated, a 12 single cask Port Dundas single grain and Cutty Sark Prohibition.

@RianC My experience, and that of many others, is that the Kilkerran 12 comes into its own a month or two after opening. No one seems too impressed on first opening. My 2 month old half-full bottle is now a fully opened shining star. It still has a little bite, which I like.

@BlueNote in light of the recent discussions re the taste of Barley - can you describe what you're not enjoying about this bottle? Is it the flavour profile or is it just not well made? I've had it a couple of times and thought it just meh - not unpleasant but nothing especially enjoyable

@BlueNote
BlueNote replied

@Hewie I guess I expected it to be a big improvement on the Major's Reserve, but it has the same odd flavour profile which I will try to describe more fully after I let the bottle sit for a while. I will try to pin down what it is that's putting me off after I give it another try.

Picked up a bottle of Redbreast 12. Wanted to try an Irish Whisky. I found it quite peppery.

@GoHabs - Enjoyed a bottle early this year - my 2nd pot still. I do like that style of whisky but that one was possibly a bit too sherried for me. Very decent though.

Just ordered a bottle of Springbank 12 cask strength.

Why? Well I love the Springbank 10 and I love cask strength whiskies so win, win! I've never tried this one before.

I thought all the SP12CS had sold out but found a bottle at a UK based online retailer called The Whisky World. I've never used them before) I generally use either MOM or TWE). But I have to say I'm impressed so far. Price was good at £59 and within an hour of ordering I'd had an email to say it had been shipped.

Finally pulled the trigger on a Bunnahabhain 18. I love the 12 and this was the next step. I have too many open bottles at this point so it'll be a bit before I crack into it.

@Hewie For me it's going from $52 (12) to $138. It's my most expensive bottle which brings up another point. I picked up Glenfarclas 21 for $105. To find another 21 year old whisky for $105 is unheard of. It's a shame and those prices will easily restrict me from trying some older expressions out there.

@jsilevinac I too got the Bunna 18 (though not in my possession yet). I will get it hopefully in december, but I tried it last winter and it was fantastic. The leather note was the highlight of it for me and I look really forward to have another taste. I would like to get your opinion about it.
